This semester at FSU, I made a pact with myself to spend more time outside of the comfort of my dorm room. I’ve lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania my entire life, and it’s been hard trying to make Tallahassee feel like home to me. Finding comfort in Deviney Hall here on campus has been the easiest to do since I was able to make the space my own, but I’ve been really trying to find comfort in the whole of Tallahassee and embrace the differences that being a student who lives 15 hours away brings me.
9:00 a.m.
I am not a morning person in the slightest, so normally on days that I have class, I don’t get up until I absolutely have to. Last night, though, I was really in the mood for some Sweet Shop breakfast, so I decided to get up early this morning for it. It was absolutely worth it! I got the Caprese croissant and a strawberry mango smoothie (not sponsored but 10/10) and studied for the French test I was about to take. The Sweet Shop kind of reminds me of this little cafe back in Pittsburgh called Delanie’s Coffee (if anyone ever plans a trip there, this is an absolute must-visit!) and going there makes me feel a little more at home.
10:30 A.m.
I started to head over to my class to take my test, which I’m pretty sure I aced, and then went to my history class right after. I then went to my last class of the day, The Social Psychology of Dress, which I honestly think is becoming my favorite class of the semester.
2:30 P.M.
After my classes, my roommate and I went to Walmart to pick up a grocery order my parents put in for us. I think the hardest thing about being out of state is not being able to have my family come for random visits just to take me to the store for something or to just hang out with me. Over time it’s gotten easier, especially since I’m able to call and text them, but it’s definitely been a struggle knowing how hard it is to be able to see them.
4:30 P.m.
After Walmart, my roommate and I went on a “hot girl walk” to explore campus before we had to get ready to go get dinner with our friend.
5:30 P.m.
We met up with our other friend and went to Cascades Park for a picnic. We grabbed Little Masa for dinner—I got the Mango Tango Roll—and then watched the sunset while we ate. Picnics are one of my favorite things ever (minus eating in the grass), so going here was the highlight of my day. I had only ever been to Cascades once before this. I think it’s so gorgeous and honestly, is just the perfect place to go hang out with friends.
7:30 P.M.
We ended the day by having a movie night at my friend’s apartment. They’re both obsessed with Descendants and were offended that I had never seen it before, so we binged the first two. I have to say, I did like it a lot better than I thought I would (I’m now counting down the days until we watch the third). Nights like these are really what make the transition to moving so far away easier. Being able to have girls’ nights with the new friends I make here, just as I had them with my friends back in Pittsburgh, makes me feel so much more at home here.
