The last time anyone saw or heard of Missy Elliott was when she showed up at the Super Bowl with Katy Perry and almost stole the show entirely from her (with the help of left shark of course). Fans were going crazy with her appearance; Missy Elliott is a legend in her field, creating music like no other. When her songs come on you just cannot help but to “Lose Control” and “Get Ur Freak On.”
After around three years without a new single and forever without an album Missy Elliott is back with style. The rapper dropped a new single Thursday October 12th titled “WTF”, which stands for “Where They From” featuring Pharrell. The song has everything we would expect from Elliott, catchy and whimsical lyrics, a great beat and an amazing video to go with it.

With the premiere of the single Elliott also dropped a music video. The video starts with some people listening and singing along to the track. Soon it switches from these faces to that of Missy Elliot’s dressed in a silver disco ball tracksuit, metallic lipstick and snow goggles, which takes on the appearance of some space-age wear. The video is full of these beautiful creations; one part of the clip has Elliott turning each time facing the camera her face and clothes changing from one art piece to the next.

One thing always expected from Missy Elliot’s videos is the dancing and she does not disappoint. We follow through this futuristic video jumping from scene to scene with dances not only focusing on Elliott but the dancers. A Missy Elliott video is known for two major things; it always has a futuristic vibe and dancing is used as an integral part in forming the video. Unlike some videos of other artists, Elliot always zooms in to capture her dancers individually then expands to encompass her and all the other attributes of the video.
We can see this play in camera angles in the scene (what I would call the cutest part of the video) where Elliott and Pharrell are seen as dancing marionettes. Here again the lens zooms focusing on a group of artists then it eye is turned to the dancing marionettes coming in directly on the Missy Elliott and Pharrell dolls. But then the camera zooms out as we see real people dancing behind the two dolls.
Missy Elliott has returned what the world of hip-hop has been missing. Her. The innovativeness of her music and the twists and turns she takes with the creation of her music and style is beautiful. So welcome back Missy Elliott, and let’s hope she will stay for a while!
