According to a Florida State University newsletter sent out on Apr. 15, FSU announced that they would officially shift Summer C classes online, putting a hold on incoming freshmen moving to Tallahassee for the summer and admitted students shifting their summer plans. Summer Session C runs from June 22 to July 31, and for many, this period consists of freshmen admitted for a summer term taking their classes for the first time. All classes over the summer are being transitioned online at FSU, which means that other universities in Florida will most likely or already have transitioned to remote learning as well.
The newsletter also states: “FSU will cancel or postpone all in-person events consisting of 10 people or more to reduce introduction of the virus into new communities and to slow the spread of infection in communities already affected by the virus. This policy shall be in effect until Aug. 2, 2020, and will be under continual review.” Hopefully, by August, academic classes and social activities will resume back to normal and the fall semester will not continue online. FSU has not explicitly mentioned if COVID-19 will prompt the cancellation of campus classes during the fall semester, as it is still following the mandated schedule. In FSU’s Frequently Asked Questions newsletter, they mention that the fall semester is scheduled to begin on Aug. 24, but it will be altered depending on the timing and severity of COVID-19. All FSU students can do now is wait and see what will unfold.
University housing remains another issue during the pandemic, with current and incoming freshmen wondering what their housing situation is looking like. For incoming freshmen, the newsletter states: “University Housing will not be available for the Summer C term for first-time students or those who left campus earlier this spring. If a student has already contracted for housing for Summer C, their deposit will be credited to their student account.” FSU has already refunded both housing and meal-plan payments for current freshmen who left campus amidst the decision to shut-down campus in March.
So, what is expected of current Summer C students? For incoming freshmen, FSU’s mandatory orientation is being transitioned online and registration is open until May 1. Classes during the summer range from 6-9 credit hours (equivalent to 2-3 classes) and students will be able to enroll during orientation with the help of an advisor. Classes requiring textbooks and other materials can be directly ordered and shipped from the FSU bookstore. Any other questions Summer C students may have can be answered through FSU’s Coronavirus: Student Resources page.
Stay safe!
