It finally happened. I was looking through my email the other day and in my inbox sat a message from Ulta that read: “Check Out Our New Holiday Palettes!” I stopped scrolling and opened up the email and sure enough, I was redirected to all the new palettes Too Faced and Tarte are releasing this season. I thought, “Oh well, makeup brands always are the first to release their holiday products, no big deal.” I chose to just ignore it until I decided to go to the mall a couple of days later. When I walked into Macy’s from the parking lot, I was immediately bombarded with cocktail dresses ranging from burgundy to emerald. While at first glance it might seem like just a theme around the sales floor, it all started clicking. All these looks were suited for a company holiday party. I shrugged it off thinking, “department stores are always three beats ahead everyone else.” But then it continued. I went into Bath and Body Works and was greeted with a sign that promoting the end of fall and the arrival of winter. The same with Yankee Candle. It turned out that every store I went into seemed like they were trying to get rid of their autumn goodies to make way for their Christmas collections, therefore marking the start to the holiday season.

I know some of you have already opened up a new tab to see the new palettes and that some of you are probably thinking, “Well duh, this happens every year.” But to me, it just gets sooner and sooner. Halloween has yet to come and go and the halls are already decked with holly! Don’t get me wrong, I love the smell of pine and gingerbread, and even though I might be coming off as a Scrooge, I actually love the holidays. That’s why I want to savor them and not have them speed by with the rest of the year. Especially living in Florida, where it can seem like there is only one season: summer. When we push the holidays sooner and sooner, they feel stretched out and they begin to overlap and it starts losing its magic, like seeing discounted Halloween candy next to candy canes.
There was a time when the holidays were officially here the day of Thanksgiving, you know when Santa and his sleigh goes by at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. Then it turned into November 1st and now mid-October! I just feel at times, the holidays become so commercialized that we are more concerned about sales and buying the “newest” products, that we forget about celebrating the true spirit that comes with the holidays.
So, to my fellow autumn lovers, don’t start kissing your Pumpkin Spice Lattes goodbye, there is still some time left. I suggest you start watching Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown, put on your favorite pair of brown boots, and grab all the candy corn you can find because the most wonderful time of the year is already upon us.
