Entering the uncharted territory that is college is frightful for many first-generation students. Coming from parents who have no idea what it’s like to even apply for college, it can be scary to step out of the mold created by past generations. From my experience with other first-generation students, most people feel an obligation to stay at home and help as much as possible, whether it be financially or emotionally. This isn’t uncommon for most families in this position. Though it’s heartbreaking, this makes me want to celebrate all first-generation college students who made it through and are trying their absolute best to make the most of this new yet exciting time!
Being a first-generation college student is no easy feat. There are so many things that are going to seem completely foreign as a newcomer, from registering for classes to getting to know your way around campus. The transition from high school to college will
be life-changing in the best way possible. It can be tricky to learn the ins and outs of college life. (FYI for any college newcomer: an 8 a.m. in high school is NOT the same in college). There’s just something about having the freedom to not show up to class, which will make you not show up to class, but starting college is the beginning of true independence and freedom! For the first time ever you don’t have a curfew or chores given by your parents, leading to many late nights and uncleaned rooms, for some. This experience can bring a multitude of feelings like fear, nervousness and excitement. It’s a lot to take in, but with the proper expectations of what college life is like, you will not be led astray.
The leap from your high school self to your college self will be interesting, to say the least. You will constantly evolve even the smallest things about yourself. You could wake up one day with a newfound love for coffee that you never had before, or even find that you actually enjoy going to the gym! With these internal changes about yourself, you will also learn the ups and downs that come with the different relationships you will make too! Friendships from back home may drift away, while new ones are being formed on campus. Professors will have this thing called “office hours” that will seem intimidating at first. Romantic relationships may form quicker than anticipated. Basically, just be prepared for the whirlwind of emotions that will be thrown your way as a first-time college student.
There is a big responsibility that comes with being a first-gen student. Younger siblings and college hopefuls look up to you and wish to one day accomplish what you did. It only makes you want to work harder to inspire future generations, letting them know that college is possible! This will set a standard for others in your family and could even spark inspiration in one of your parents to go back to school! The rewards of attending college are endless and they’re even bigger when it’s being done for the first time.
