Do you ever wonder how Her Campus runs behind the scenes? How do the individual school’s members get involved? I interviewed the President, Christian Pruitt, and Editor-in-Chief, Jacqualyn Pfeil, at Florida State University (FSU) to understand how and why they got involved, why they continue to stay involved and why the experience has been beneficial.
Pictured is Chrisitan Pruitt, the President of Her Campus at FSU. She is a Digital Media Production major and enjoys videography, style and other aspects related to social media.
As the President of Her Campus at FSU, Christian makes sure everything is running smoothly as a whole. She works with all the Her Campus FSU teams to ensure the correct information is getting out and that all jobs are completed accordingly. In particular, Christian works a lot with the social media side with the Media Staff. She operates with the Social Media Director, Erin, to plan campaigns and bounce off ideas on how to get people involved and interacting with Her Campus at FSU’s articles.
Christian joined after Her Campus at FSU followed her on Instagram her senior year of high school. She joined because she wanted to be a part of a strong community of women. Christian, along with all Her Campus members at FSU, started as a Staff Writer and then moved to a Content Editor after her first semester. From there, she got involved with the executive board as a social media chair and finally made her way to President. The President’s role has allowed her to continue working with the social media chair and interact with all the positions she has come to love.
Pictured is Jacqualyn Pfeil, who goes by Jackie. She is double majoring in Media/Communication Studies and Editing, Writing and Media, with a minor in Business.
As Editor-in-Chief, Jackie publishes the articles that have been written to the website. She stated that she oversees “over 80 Staff Writers, 13 Content Editors and two Head Editors.” Jackie makes all final edits to the articles after they have been through the content editors and proceeds to schedule their releases and publish them accordingly. These articles are under the categories of news, breaking news, personal and profile, such as this article. Jackie found out about Her Campus during her first semester at FSU. With her love for writing in her high school newspaper, she knew she wanted to continue. Jackie started as a Staff Writer, then moved to a Content Editor and held that position for two semesters.
Jackie has had a passion for the editorial aspect of publishing since high school, and has been an editor for Her Campus, her high school newspaper, as well as completed an internship with Southeast Review and New York University’s Summer Publishing Institute program. During her time at NYU’s Summer Publishing Institute, she spent three weeks in New York City “learning about the world of publishing and networking with people currently working in the industry.” Jackie has felt confident in her abilities from these experiences on and off-campus.
These two ladies are often working alongside each other to ensure a smoothly-run chapter. They work together with all other members of the chapter, specifically the executive board to coordinate events, meetings, workshops and social content to get involved with the public. They are also “Campus Correspondents” and work with the Her Campus national team to ensure Her Campus at FSU is getting the necessary information.
Christian and Jackie have to balance Her Campus with their full-time course work, part-time jobs and other organizations. Jackie also balances a Vice President of Membership position for her sorority Delta Nu Zeta. They both found that planning, organizing and overall time managing have helped them be successful and on top of their work.
Christian and Jackie have been able to use their experience from Her Campus to further their learning in their major and vice versa. They have learned multiple skills, networked and collaborated making them more assured as they further their career goals.
They both feel as though Her Campus is the right place for them. They get to be a part of a community in which they feel welcome and comfortable. They have expressed that they are so grateful for what they have learned during their time at Her Campus at FSU and are excited for what they will continue to learn and cannot wait to apply it in their future. They pride themselves on giving women the ability to empower and express themselves through writing and social media, and are grateful to provide an experience that others can use now and in the future.
