Her Campus (HC): So you’ve been super involved with the Asian American Student Union. How has that experience helped you develop as a leader?
Katrina Pitt (KP): AASU and its affiliates have helped me grow tremendously during my four years at FSU. I have been able to learn efficient organizational skills, better my public speaking, and become an advocate for Asian Americans on campus. I was able to meet a lot of mentors and [some] really great friends by being a part of AASU.
HC: What impact do you want AASU to have on campus?
KP: I would like AASU to impact Florida State by continuing to create programming that educates as well as celebrates our diverse Asian American culture, events such as our Lunar Banquet or our Heritage Month. If you’re interested in Asian American culture, come to some of our events to learn more and connect with us here!
HC: What events does AASU have left this semester?
KP: Currently we’re halfway through our Asian American Heritage Month, so we have quite a few awesome events! On Tuesday (March 31st) we [had] our AASU Pageant, on Wednesday (April 1st) we [had] Jose Antonio Vargas coming to speak, and on April 9th we have our Asian American Music, Poetry and Dance (AAMP’D) Concert. We also have a lot of events hosted by our affiliate organizations. Check out this website for more information.
HC: Last month was Women’s History Month. What female inspires you most and why?
KP: Definitely my mom, because she works hard at her job, but she is also able to be there for [me and my sisters] whenever we need her. She encourages us to be honest in whatever we say, and always pushes us to be better versions of ourselves.
HC: How has your involvement shaped your FSU experience?
KP: Since becoming involved in various organizations on campus, I have been able to develop outside of the classroom. I have created [life-long] friendships through being in AASU, being an orientation leader, and being in the College of Business Student Leadership Council. I hope more students will branch out from their friend group and become passionate and engaged leaders within their community.
HC: What’s your favorite memory at FSU?
KP: I have so many awesome memories at FSU, but my favorite memory would be during my time as an orientation leader. During a conference we attended, we competed in a dance competition with 20 other teams, and we won second place! We had practiced the dance for weeks beforehand and were able to bring 40 people into one fantastic dance. It was definitely quite an experience.
HC: You’re graduating soon. What are your post-college plans?
KP: After graduation on May 2nd (eeek), I’m going to Europe for a month with one of my sisters and then I’ll start working full-time in June for Amica.Â
HC: Now for the fun questions! Dunkin’ or Starbucks?
KP: Well, I’m not much of a coffee drinker, but I do love donuts so I’m going to have to say Dunkin’!
HC: What’s your favorite ’90s TV show?
KP: IÂ recently [watched] all of the Friends episodes in order on Netflix and I’m jealous of their lives in NYC, but I think my favorite ’90s show was Sister, Sister.
