Meet Dabney Waring: FSU’s All-Around Celebrity

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Name: Dabney Tyler Waring

Age: 19

Year: Sophomore

Hometown: Tampa, FL

Major: International Affairs, Chinese

Her Campus (HC): So Dabney, tell us a little bit about yourself!

Dabney Waring (DW):  As of now, I’m trying to complete a dual degree program in International Affairs and Chinese with a minor that has yet to be determined. I am interested in foreign languages, movies, Norway, and photos of adult panda bears doing everyday things.

HC: What clubs or organizations are you involved with on campus?

DW: I’m involved with the acappella group, “All-Night Yahtzee,” I’m a member of Phi Eta Sigma and the FSU Honors Program, and I’ve also participated in the UROP program doing research in Political Science.

HC: What’s it like to be a member of All-Night Yahtzee?

DW: It’s been really great to have music back in my life after a one-year hiatus! Everyone in the group is really cool and fun to hangout with. We recently competed in ICCA which was exciting. This year we won first place at quarter-finals, third place at semi-finals, and are currently submitting a video for the wildcard round. If we win the wildcard round, we get to compete in finals, which are held in New York.

HC: That’s pretty impressive! How long have you been performing? What got you started?

DW: The first time I was on stage was in a children’s theatre group when I was four years old. Does children’s theatre group sound creepy? It did to me just now. I was singing a lot, so my parents thought it would be a good outlet for me. I was also involved in theatre and chorus all throughout high school.

HC: You sound like you’ve always got something going on, but what do you like to do in your spare time?

(DW): I love to read- fiction, non-fiction, essays, etc. Once I was vegan for a week and a half and it was lifechanging. I was thinking more clearly, seeing things more clearly. I was able to hear higher and lower frequencies maybe. I recently discovered the Rez and kayaking is my new favorite pastime. I also record my own audiobooks. I record myself reading other people’s novels out loud. So that takes up a lot of my time. Just kidding. I’m a quick reader. And those are for sale, actually.

HC: What are your plans for the future?

DW: After graduation, I’m interested in pursuing a master’s degree, maybe going abroad to teach or study. I don’t do so well with long-term plans, but these are the things I’m considering. I always keep in mind that opportunities come up and things change, so I try and go with flow.

HC: What advice would you give to incoming freshmen?

DW: Go crazy and take advantage of all the opportunities here at FSU. I mean, really make an effort to find out everything that’s available because there is so much. And if you’re interested in going abroad, do it early in your undergraduate career. And study and all that.

HC: What are three words your peers would use to describe you?

DW: Inspiring, So-Inspiring!, Vulgar.

When she's not drowning in assigned readings, Sarah enjoys attempting to get celebrities to follow her on Twitter, daily Dunkin Donuts trips, praising Stevie Nicks, and (unsuccesfully) begging her boyfriend to buy her a kitten. Sarah hopes to one day put her witty banter to good use by writing for a clever yet underappreciated TV show, and eventually becoming the next Tina Fey.
