Hannah Masten is a senior at Florida State and has been involved with Her Campus since her freshman year. In this organization, she has been published many times while also running the Instagram. Now, she is leading a group of amazing women this year as president! This past week I was able to ask her a few questions about how she got started and what this organization means to her. Her Campus is so lucky to have her and we all cannot wait to see her thrive! Â
Her Campus (HC): When and why did you join Her Campus?
Hannah Masten (HM): I joined Her Campus in the Spring semester of my Freshman year (2019) because I was searching for a place to find my people at FSU. I had also just started writing for my own personal blog and was really enjoying the writing process. I really had no idea about all the other amazing parts of this organization, but after the first meeting I was hooked!
HC: During your first year, did you know you wanted to be on the executive board?
HM: During my first year, I got involved with the social media team, (the Instagram team specifically!), and fell in love with social media. The director of our team was outgoing, motivated, and super friendly. She always offered us new opportunities to learn more about the HC brand and social media in general. After working on the team for a few weeks, I began to love it and applying for exec was definitely something I became interested in!
HC: As President of Her Campus at FSU, what are your duties?
HM: As President of Her Campus at FSU, I work closely with our Editor-In-Chief Lauren Martin to manage roughly 120 writers, 15 editors, and an executive board of 12. Lauren and I create weekly powerpoints for our meetings and manage bi-weekly events for our team to keep each writer involved and happy. In my position specifically, I oversee our events team and social media teams. I also work directly with Her Campus Nationals on exciting campaigns with companies like Vera Bradley, Hallmark and Mary Kay.
HC: What is your favorite part about Her Campus?
HM: My favorite part of Her Campus is the community. At FSU, we have a large team of women from all backgrounds, majors and walks of life. I love that we can all come together with the common goal to empower women and gain valuable career experience. I have met my best friends, my current roommate and some of the most amazing women at FSU at Her Campus meetings. Last spring, I had the opportunity to intern at Her Campus Nationals and experienced the same community (or in HC terms, girl gang) there.Â
HC: What experiences have you gained from writing for Her Campus and handling the social media aspect of it?
HM: At Her Campus FSU all writers are expected to write weekly or bi-weekly articles. That being said, almost all of our writers walk away from each semester with a full portfolio of writing samples and social media projects. I truly believe that the experience I’ve gained on this team is the reason I have been able to get my foot in the door at interviews and career fairs! Managing an Instagram of over 6,000 followers is a big deal and definitely taught me a lot about managing analytics, monitoring posts and engaging an audience.
HC: What advice do you have for aspiring members wanting to be a part of the executive board?
HM: My advice for anyone interested in getting involved with an executive team is to get involved in whatever way you can at your current level. At Her Campus FSU, this may mean getting involved with the social media team or becoming an editor. Once you’re in that position, go above and beyond! Pitch new ideas, attend events and get to know the team.
HC: What does Her Campus mean to you?
HM: To me, Her Campus is home. It’s the place where I discovered my passion for marketing and social media, the place I found my best friends and the place that inspires me each week to work hard. I couldn’t imagine my time at FSU without Her Campus!
