Miley Cyrus is back and better than ever before. She is releasing her seventh album on Nov. 27, but she’s ditching her country and pop roots this time. Plastic Hearts is Miley’s first rock album and follows up her 2017 studio album Younger Now. Cyrus released her six-song extended play (EP) She Is Coming last year; however, she tells Pitchfork that it “never felt right” to continue to tell her story in the original format.
Originally, Cyrus was planning on releasing another pop album. However, due to her successful covers of typical rock bands such as Metallica, Audioslave, Pearl Jam and the Cranberries, Miley knew that she had to do a rock album, and it’s been two years in the making. “Thought I had it all figured out…but no one checks an ego like life itself,” Miley conveys to Alternative Press as she talks about the planning of her upcoming album and how she felt about her whole life. The California wildfires destroyed Miley’s home in Malibu in 2018 and much of her work for the next album. “Nature did what I now see as a favor and destroyed what I couldn’t let go of for myself; I lost my house in a fire but found myself in its ashes,” Cyrus states. Although most of her work was recovered, she scrapped it and believed it was best to start over.Â
Miley has received much attention from her covers of Blondie’s “Heart of Glass,” which she performed at the 2020 iHeartRadio Music Festival and the Cranberries “Zombie” at the most recent LA’s Whiskey Go-Go. Her covers even became a trending sound on TikTok. It did so well that Miley released her version of “Heart of Glass” on Spotify and Apple Music. She’s received much praise from the original artist too. The Cranberries tweeted, “We were delighted to hear of Miley Cyrus’ cover of Zombie at the Whisky a Go-Go #SOSFEST in LA at the weekend. It’s one of the finest covers of the song that we’ve heard. We think Dolores would be very impressed!”Â
Plastic Hearts will include Miley’s new single “Midnight Sky” as well as her cover of “Heart of Glass” and “Zombie” by the Cranberries. Cyrus reveals that this album’s inspiration is the band Metallica and how she even wanted to incorporate her covers of Metallica songs. This wouldn’t be the first time Miley performed Metallica covers. She performed “Nothing Else Matters” from Metallica’s Black album at the 2019 Glastonbury Festival.
Additionally, Miley has confirmed that her 15 track rock album will feature Dua Lipa and Billy Idol. Cyrus revealed that Mick Rock, the famous rock and roll photographer, is responsible for her album cover, which is very similar to the Plasmatics’ album cover.Â
The former Hannah Montana star refers to this new album as “the beginning” of a new chapter in her life. “When something is over, we call it ‘The End,'” she says, “but it was far from that.”Â
