Her Campus (HC): What are you currently involved in at FSU and what have you been involved with in the past?
Logan Godby (LG): I am currently the president of Beta Theta Pi, a social IFC fraternity, as well as a Morale Captain for Dance Marathon. In the past I have been apart of Florida State’s very own Flying High Circus where I did double trapeze and teeter board. I was also apart of the Bryan Hall living learning community where I worked with campus sustainability in the residence halls. In addition, I was a speaker the TEDxFSU conference where I discussed the strength of a disability and how often times learning disabilities offer a unique processing abilities, that if applied correctly can provide great success. And finally I was a 2014 Orientation Leader under the office of New Student and Family Programs.
HC: As president of Beta what are your plans and what are you excited to do while in this position?
LG: Beta Theta Pi was invited back to Florida State’s campus in the fall of 2013 where I joined as a Founding Father. I saw this as an opportunity for me to change what I wanted to see in Greek life at FSU and to develop men of principle for a principled life. As President, I am committed to our vision and hope to continue building a successful organization that benefits the community and combats some of the negatively stereotyped cultural aspects of Greek life. I was recently selected to be one of six representatives from Beta to partake in a national campaign to speak out against the media’s portrayal of fraternity culture and I hope that we can translate this into creating a supportive environment for the betterment of all men in Greek life. I am excited to be in this position to hopefully empower individuals to create a diverse and successful future by building better brothers, better sons, and better fathers to sustainably create a brighter future for Greek life.
HC: How do you balance everything and what advice do you have to for students looking to get as involved as you?
LG: Balance is the keystone in my life that guides the decisions that I make. Everyday we make decisions and the sum of these decisions can be described as habits. By creating good habits of allocating appropriate time to studying, your health, organizations and your personal life you can create a lifestyle that is in line with your goals. In my attempt to stay balanced, I have created good habits by regimenting my schedule to include all of my needs for the day. I have found that once I can go thought the motions then I can start putting more energy into the things that matter most while still fulfilling all of my personal needs. For students that want to get involved, look for organizations and activities that better more than one aspect of your life. Look into clubs that are within your major and activites that feed your soul while surrounding yourself with good people that support your dreams and ambitions. And don’t forget to get enough sleep!
HC: What drives you to be a leader on campus?
LG: I would like to think that I am an ambitious individual and that I am driven to be the voice of organizations because of my passion for success, but I think that I have become a leader on campus because I just really like helping people. It wasn’t something I set out to do but something that just happened. Of course it was not just by happenstance that I found myself in these positions but I think that my drive to provide for others and make the people around me better is the reason why I am encouraged to take these positions of leadership.
HC: What is your favorite memory at FSU?
LG: This one is by far the hardest question to answer because FSU has provided me with so many amazing memories, but one of my favorite memories was being able to be a part of the National Championship Viewing Party at the Civic Center where I performed a discipline of circus arts—where I spin in a giant metal ring called a cyr wheel in front of 10,000 screaming fans and then was able to celebrate the win with some of my favorite people at the University.
HC: If you were locked in a karaoke bar and couldn’t leave until you sung a song, what song would you sing?
LG: If I were locked in a karaoke bar and had to sing one song I would probably sing “Come Fly With Me” by the one and only Frank Sinatra.
