The New iPhone X: What’s So New About it?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

So, let’s address the Applephant in the room. Apple has released advertisements and sneak peeks for their three new iPhone models. This time around Apple is introducing the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR, and the internet is in a frenzy. The release of these new models is overall pretty controversial because of the extravagant and arguably excessive number of technological features they have.

The iPhone XS, being the smallest of the three with a “5.8 inch display”  screen, starts at $999 and increases in cost as you go up in gigabytes. The larger version of this model is the iPhone XS Max (sized at 6.5 inches), follows the same cost pattern starting at a whopping $1099 dollars. The iPhone XR has a display of 6.1 inches, costing $749, making it the “least expensive” option, a term I use loosely.

Apple has many disclaimers throughout their updated website, one of which commenting on the size of these phones . So, while they advertise a certain sized display screen with each model, they make sure to clarify that “the display has rounded corners that follow a beautiful curved design… [making the] actual viewable area is less” which seems pretty sneaky on Apple’s part. Apple’s website emphasizes size and quality, “The custom OLED displays on iPhone XS deliver the most accurate color in the industry, HDR, and true blacks. And iPhone XS Max has our largest display ever on an iPhone”, while also elaborating upon their new and improved durable water and dust resistant materials. The glass back of the allows wireless charging, and customers can choose from the colors gold or space grey for their iPhone XS or XS Max and a rainbow of colors for the iPhone XR.

If there is one thing that gets me excited about iPhones, it is their picture quality (way better than androids, am I right ladies?).  All jokes aside, Apple seems to be kicking up their photo quality, “Smart HDR. New secondary frames, a faster sensor, and the powerful A12 Bionic chip bring more highlight and shadow detail to your photos.” A cool new feature the new phones possess involves their portrait mode, where “photos look even more professional thanks to a sophisticated background blur” and you can now control the depth of even after taking the picture.

One of the most controversial aspects of iPhones is their face identification. Apple claims “security is simple when your face is your password” for everything. Literally everything, “You can unlock your iPhone, log in to apps, and pay for things with a glance”, which does not sound very secure to me.

I am most interested in the fact that these smartphones have literally reached the price of over 1,000 dollars. In my opinion, that is insane. I mean, it’s a PHONE! But that’s just it- they are not just phones anymore. They are cameras and computers and so much more in one compact machine. So, what do you think of the new iPhones?
