New York Fashion Week Recap

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

The Recap: You read it right, ladies! Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, also know as New York Fashion Week, has officially made its grand debut. With designers showcasing their sought after Spring/Summer 2013 collections, New York Fashion Week is one of the most important weeks of the year (if not the most important) in the fashion industry. This season, some of fashion’s A-list designers – Oscar de la Renta, Michael Kors, Jason Wu, Zac Posen and Marc Jacobs to name a few – stunned viewers with bright colored gowns, new silhouettes, and even models doing aerobics while sitting on the runway.  To say the least, this year’s New York Fashion Week was definitely one for the books.

The Trends: Along with NYFW comes the showcasing of new trends for the upcoming seasons.

1)      Leopard: This classic trend, was showcased on the runway by brands such as Herve Leger by Max Azria, Elie Tahari, and DKNY.

2)      Leather: Leather was also seen trending on the runway this season. Marni leather dresses, leather hot pants by Mugler, and even red-hot leather coats by Valentino were all the rage on the runways.  My Thought: This trend will last much longer than just spring of this year. You can purchase fashionable, leather attire at almost any store nowadays for a decent price. Also, more brands are coming out with – not only black leather – but colored leather, opening the trend up to a larger consumer base.

3)      My favorite trend on the runway: I love quilting because it can be worn as clothing or used on a clutch to accessorize a simple outfit. Its interchangeability between clothing and accessories allows it to be worn by everyone, which is always a plus. From dresses to outerwear, leopard, leather and quilting will be a few more “must haves” to add to your closet this Spring/Summer 2013 season.

The Runway: This year’s runway designs at New York Fashion Week were another most talked about topic. Each year, designers try to outdo the runways from previous years.  Although, outdoing the volcano-themed Chanel fall collection runway from 2011 is quite a task. This season, Jason Wu had models walk around an enormous, yet gorgeous chandelier that was strategically placed in the middle of the runway. Marc Jacobs had a giant sun-looking decoration hanging at his show, giving it an ultra chic vibe. Runways aren’t just for viewing purposes, they represent brands. All the designers this season made sure not to disappoint when it came to the design aspect of their runway shows.

As quickly as it came, New York Fashion Week 2013 has gone. Didn’t get to watch any of the shows from New York Fashion Week this year? No worries! You can still watch some of the most sought-after shows from the comfort of your own couch.  Below is a link to view my favorite New York Fashion Week show, from the exquisite and brilliant Marc Jacobs. Hope you enjoy! (Keep an eye out for Rachel Zoe and Anna Wintour sitting in the front row!)
