Hey, all you cool cats and kittens. Netflix recently released the trailer for the second season of everyoneâs favorite quarantine watch: Tiger King. We give you a recap on the first season and tell you whatâs in store for the next.
Season 1 cast and recap
The first season of the show took us into the world of big cats in captivity. Producer Eric Goode introduces us to our crazy cast of characters. The showâs main focus is the story of Joe Exotic, The Tiger King, âJoe Exoticâ, whose full name is Joseph Maldonado-Passage. We hear from the man himself about the path that led him to a jail cell. Maldonado-Passage was sentenced in 2020 to 22 years in prison for wildlife law violations and the murder-for-hire plot of Carole Baskin.
Carole Baskin is an animal rights activist that runs the Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, Florida. The first season revolves around the feud between her and Joe Exotic which culminated in him in jail for attempted murder-for-hire. In the first season, we are introduced to Carole and her husband Howard and at the end of the second episode we are told by many of the people interviewed that Caroleâs third husband Don has been missing for years and presumed dead.
Doc Antle is a zookeeper who owns the Myrtle Beach Safari, at the end of the first season we are told that Myrtle Beach Safari was raided by authorities in December 2019.Â
Jeff Lowe was the man who took over Joeâs park, the G.W. Exotic Animal Park when he went to prison. Joe claims in the show that Jeff Lowe set him up to go to prison in order to take over his park.
Trailer anAlysis
The trailer for season 2 was released by Netflix on YouTube on Oct. 27. The trailer promises viewers there is more to this wild story opening with a voice telling the audience, âWhen you think youâve seen it all, you havenât quite seen it allâ. In the background, we can hear the voice of Liza Minelli singing âMaybe This Timeâ from Cabaret, as we see familiar faces from the first season. We hear from Joe Exotic, still in jail and insisting that he is innocent. He laments that âeveryone from the zoo is out there making money and Iâm paying the priceâ.
The focus of the trailer then shifts to Baskinâs missing husband asking, âWhat happened to Don Lewis?â We can tell from the trailer that they will be looking more into the shady business that Don Lewis was involved with while in Costa Rica. The trailer then ramps it up a notch promising that weâve âonly scratched the surfaceâ on the drama between Jeff Lowe and Joe Exotic. Clips of jet skis, a bus asking former President Donald Trump to free Joe Exotic from prison, a raid of property and of course big cats. We are certainly in for a wild ride.
cast update
Joe Exotic announced on Wednesday, Nov. 4 that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer through a note from prison. He will be appearing in the new season through interviews from prison.
Carole Baskin filed to sue Netflix and the production company of the series, Royal Goode Productions over the use of footage of herself and her husband in the second season of the show. Clips of her are used in the trailer for Tiger King 2 so it is fair to assume that footage of her may appear in the new season. Baskinâs grievance is that she only signed paperwork for her image to be used in one season. A federal judge in Florida denied her request for a temporary restraining order which was filed to stop the season from premiering on Netflix on Nov. 17 with footage of them in it.
Doc Antle was indicted on wildlife trafficking charges in Oct. 2020. Itâs not clear whether he will appear in the new season of the show.
Jeff Lowe will appear in the new series; it is unclear what he is up to as the former G.W. Exotic Animal Park is now owned by Carole Baskin and is permanently closed.
