Not Travelling This Spring Break? Here Are Some Things to Do Instead!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

With the travel bans across the world from the Coronavirus, it can feel like Spring Break is going to be the most boring 7 days of the year. Self-quarantine can feel like prison. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to spend Spring Break without stepping out of your door. Here are just a few!

Read a book!

A good book is the best way to pass the time. Pick up that novel you bought back in high school that you never finished. That graphic novel your friend recommended? Buy it online and see if you like it! There’s nothing like an interesting read to fill your days. In a way, it’s a free form of travel. If you’re like me and you’re a fan of sci-fi or fantasy, books can take you to lands even more exciting than what’s on this earth.

Do some Yoga/Meditation

This time of year can be especially stressful for students with midterms ending and finals just around the corner. A great way to release this tension is to do some meditation. Put on some soft music, sit (or lie down) somewhere comfortable and let your mind wander. Focus on your brain and not on your body for a moment. For beginners, check out guided meditation podcasts on Spotify or YouTube. Yoga is also a great way to spend your time. Not only is it a healthy practice for your body and mind, but it can be done anywhere! You can watch a movie while doing a downward dog. It’s an easy way to exercise and feel better about yourself.

Binge a T.V. Show

I was reminded today that X-Files has over 200 episodes. You could easily knock out 10 episodes a day with enough dedication. And once Spring Break is over, there will be plenty of episodes left over to watch instead of doing that paper you need to finish for your English professor about Shakespeare.

Find a Creative Outlet

I remember as a kid busting out the markers and crayons when I was bored and creating pictures. As a 19-year-old, I’ll do the same thing with a pencil and a piece of paper. Creating is a great way to not only express yourself but also pass the time! There are many ways you can do this, from dancing around your bedroom to drawing, to coloring, to journaling, to writing. If you feel bold, prop up your camera and film a YouTube video. Get the artistic juices flowing!

These are just a few suggestions but there are plenty of things to do without leaving your house. Have fun and be safe!

Although I'm born and bred in Florida, my heart and my feet take me wherever I feel. That's what gave me such wonderful experiences as my journeys to New York City, my summer spent at the Blue Ridge Summer Institute in Sweet Briar Virginia, and even across the pond to the Netherlands and France. A writer at heart, I also foray into other artistic pursuits such as drawing, playing music, and singing (mostly in the shower.) When I'm not busy with classes, I'm often watching a good show on Netflix, or playing a game of Dungeons and Dragons with some other fellow nerds.
