Last Wednesday night, March 22, was quite an eventful night for The Brass Tap on Gaines Street in Tallahassee. They hosted a trivia night for the hilarious hit comedy TV show, “The Office.” Walking into the bar, I felt the excitement radiating from the building. “The Office” fans crowded the place in anticipation to test their knowledge on how well they knew their favorite TV show. Amongst those loyal fans was yours truly.
Here’s how the game works: Each team registers with a team name. Mine happened to be “Jim and Pam’s Long Lost Kids,” *sigh* if only. Then after maybe ordering a beer or their $1.99 pizza special, the DJ would ask everyone a question from the show. Now, these questions were quite specific. For example, “What did Michael first give Toby before he left to go to Costa Rica?” Only true “The Office” fans would know the answer to these questions. When a team figures out their answer, they write their team name, the question number, and their answer on a sheet of paper given to the teams at registration. For bonus points, in between each question, the DJ plays a song. If you guess the artist of the song correctly, you were given an extra point. Then when the teams finished their answers, they were to turn them into a box at the DJ booth so that the points can be counted. With these rules in mind, the competition was fierce.
One of the biggest tricks was to stay off your phone because it would be counted as cheating. I know this from first-hand experience. I was helping my team with the artist names of the songs in between the questions, so when a song came on that I knew, I just couldn’t seem to figure out the band. It was on the tip of my tongue, and I just couldn’t form the name. Out of frustration I simply looked up the song on the YouTube app on my phone. It wasn’t cheating if it didn’t pertain to the “The Office” questions, amirite? Well, no. I was very wrong. Suddenly, I heard on the speaker, “To the girl wearing the blue shirt, drinking a Blue Moon, if you use your phone again you are disqualified.” There were so many people around me, I ignored the DJ’s comment, until he repeated it, and I looked down at my blue “Dunder Mifflin Paper Co.” T-Shirt. I looked forward at my ice cold Blue Moon, and then turned my head to see the DJ hanging around the group next to me. None of them were wearing a blue shirt. My teammates gave me the eye. Oops.
All in good fun, the game continued and everyone laughed over good vibes and friendship. The winner of first place received a $30 gift card to The Brass Tap, and second place received a $20 gift card. My team, unfortunately, did not place. Despite our loss, the event was such an upbeat and joyous occasion, The Brass Tap will definitely be seeing me as a customer again.
P.S. I won’t cheat next time. I promise.
