Horrific tragedies occur every day, but we aren’t fully aware of them. The news constantly spits out information about car accidents, robberies, etc. We listen, become saddened, question the ethics of our society and then go on with our day. But, unfortunately a tragedy occurred on the Florida State University campus on November 20th, 2014 at 12:30 a.m. that will never fade from our minds.
I consider myself fortunate on November 20th, 2014. Just like most students I went to “Club Stroz” to study. I did not think twice about my safety in regards to going to Strozier. For the past week, the library has been my home away from home. I felt safe on my campus and knew that I could get some peace and quiet while getting all of my coursework done. But, around 11:30 p.m. I decided to give the studying a break and convinced my friend to leave. I’m not going to make this a “woe is me” type of story because I cannot imagine how my fellow classmates were feeling at this daunting time. The thought of hearing the announcement that a gun man was in the building of Strozier is unimaginable to me. How could our home away from home suddenly frighten us? Why would someone do such a thing?
I watched videos and heard stories from people that were in Strozier at the time. The bravery and strength of this Seminole family is truly special and makes me proud to attend a school full of such honorable students, faculty and staff. Between comforting Facebook statuses to people lending their homes and offering comfort to anybody affected by the event, I have been amazed by the endless kindness. The power of our Seminole family in such a hardship is inspirational.
Recently, a video popped up on my newsfeed and I couldn’t help but click on the link. The video was featured on EliteDaily.com. It’s a motivational video that puts the estimated days of one person’s life on display via jellybeans. Yes, jellybeans. The approximation of days that we have on this beautiful planet is 28,835 days. The video really put the “seize the day” analogy into perspective. I encourage you to watch it and to remember to seize each and every day. Through this horrible event, our Seminole family has grown together. We must show love towards each other and to always remember that although we think we may have bad days, there is always someone that has it worst. My thoughts and prayers go out to each and every person affected by this event. Love yourself and each other and remember: One Tribe, One Heartbeat.
