Food from the dining hall is not always the most appetizing. And sometimes you don’t want to walk all the way there for something to eat. So, here are a few meals that you can make in your dorm room that are sure to be bussin’.
Bagel Sandwiches
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, you cannot go wrong with a good bagel. You can top them with cream cheese, avocado, peanut butter, fruit, eggs, cold cuts and honestly, anything you would like. Not to mention there are so many different flavors of bagels and cream cheese that you can unleash your inner food critic as you test out different combinations. My go-to breakfast is avocado toast on an everything bagel topped with a fried egg, which hits the spot every time. Not to overexaggerate but bagels definitely saved me this school year because I live in a dorm and eat them every morning. They are one less thing that I have to refrigerate.
Upgraded Ramen
Instant ramen: the epitome of a lazy college meal. Ramen can definitely come in clutch at times when you don’t feel like actually trying. But I think we both know that the spice packet does not offer enough flavor. So, a great way to upgrade this simple meal is by adding some veggies or spices. You can add frozen or fresh vegetables like baby spinach, cabbage, scallions or bean sprouts. Since instant ramen lacks protein and fiber adding a choice of meat, tofu or cracking an egg can also help you get some of those extra vitamins you would otherwise miss out on.
Mug Meals
Having only a microwave and a fridge to cook within a dorm means needing to get creative when making food, which makes microwave mug meals very useful. A recipe that is great for when there is not much to eat is a microwave omelet in a mug. Just stir your eggs with your veggies, cheese or other preferred ingredients, microwave for two to three minutes and voilà you have an omelet that is easy to cook and portable. Mug cakes are also an excellent dessert to make when you’re craving something sweet. You can use a cake mix of your choice, or bake from scratch.
Power Bowls
Power bowls are the perfect meal because they give you an excellent serving of grains, vegetables and protein. The fun aspect is that you can personalize your bowl to whatever you prefer and it does not require a lot of cooking. First, start off with your base which can be any grain including rice, quinoa, cauliflower rice or more. You can find microwaveable packets of these at the grocery store so you don’t have to use a stove. Next, you add your protein. Then your vegetables. Lastly, any other dressings or toppings your heart desires and you’re done. The best part is that the possibilities are endless!
Frozen Meals
This may be considered a simple answer, but frozen meals are a college lifesaver. Anyone who knows me knows that Trader Joe’s is my ride or die. I absolutely adore TJ’s frozen meals. They have such a wide array of frozen meals that I have made it my personal responsibility to try them all. Their frozen foods are around $3 to $5 and are two to three servings, making one serving only $1 or $2! You can make these meals in a microwave or in the dorm kitchen. Some Trader Joe’s frozen foods that I would highly recommend are the Mandarin Orange Chicken or the Vegetable Bird’s Nests.
Even though you may only have a mini-fridge and a microwave in your dorm room, cooking in college does not have to be a challenging task. If you make the best out of the items you have, you can get creative and invent new recipes. Who knows, you may even accidentally make a masterpiece.
