“I have always had a passion for fitness, knowing the importance and positive influence it had on my body and mind. After spending months in New York City exploring different types of fitness studios, I was inspired to create one in Tallahassee. With 4 years of undergraduate studies here, I am confident in the culture and community and know that Tallahassee and the students at FSU need something like this!” – Summer Calenberg, Founder

Her Campus (HC): What made you decide to create a fitness studio in Tallahassee?
Summer Calenberg (SC): I had gone to FSU as an undergraduate and then I received my Masters in Business Administration. I couldn’t really find a place in Tallahassee that was exciting and drew me to come back. I was born and raised in New York City and during my undergrad studies, I went back to New York for multiple internships. While I was there I was exposed to a variety of fitness experiences that ranged from dancing to surfing and boxing. I realized that Tallahassee was lacking a different take on fitness, the current offering is pretty oversaturated with gyms, boot camps or barre. While Zumba is kind of a thing of the past, it is still a great concept that Drip Drop Fitness somewhat pulls inspiration from. However, what we created is original, unique and exciting! Â
We call our classes’ Happy Hour because it is an hour of excitement, high energy, disco lights and dripping sweat (and new clients receive two for the price of one on classes… just like you would at a bar). You will be moving to music but also will be doing kickboxing, squatting, jumping jacks and lunges. An hour FLYS BY!
HC: Is the fitness studio open every day?
SC: We have classes’ every day. On Saturday’s we close if there is a home game since we are located downtown there is heavy traffic during those days. We have classes in the morning, afternoon and night. Our schedule is on the website, dripdropfitness.com. Â
HC: How did you create the design of the fitness studio?
SC: It is all about the overall experience and vibe from the minute you walk in; I care about how it smells, how it looks and how it feels, basically all of the senses. It is fun, it is blue and bright and it’s warm and welcoming. We play the best music, have the best sound system, the best instructors, the best flooring, shall I go on? It is a studio that is curated, fun and inspired from a true New Yorker! It is an experience you don’t want to miss!
HC: What are some challenges that come with opening your own fitness studio?
SC: It was definitely really hard because I opened before I finished graduate school. I signed my lease in February for the studio, we opened our doors in April, and I graduated with my Masters in Business in May. Building out the space, designing it, hiring people, working on legal documents, setting up Wi-Fi and on top of it all I was still studying for exams. It was very hard and there were days that I could barely sleep. It was unreal. It was a really hard time but it has been fun and a major learning experience!
