As a pre-med student and someone that has been on Florida State’s campus for two years now, I have spent quite a bit of time seeking out the best places to study on and around campus. With finals coming up, the hunt for a good study spot is on the rise, so I’ve compiled a list of three of the worst places I have spent my time studying here on FSU’s campus. Personally, I would stay away from all three, but maybe that’s just me.
3. Starbucks on Tennessee street
The best Wi-Fi hands down, yes. But there is just too much going on. If you’re someone that gets distracted easily, this is probably not the place for you. The door is constantly flinging open, stirring curiosity and the urge to look up at who’s coming through every single time. And the workers are just doing their job of course, but the barking of the names and orders gets distracting very fast. Nothing though is worse than if you’re sitting outside. The people on the streets of Tallahassee can be ruthless. Personally, I have had more than one experience sitting out there and getting approached by a man asking for money and what my name is. They mean well, I think, but not ideal for studying, nonetheless.
2. outside of Strozier
Inside of Strozier is top tier. The outside, however, is easily one of the most distracting places on campus. Landis is a hotspot for protests, fundraising and campaigning. It is a prime spot for people-watching and all things social, but definitely not studying. As an outdoor location too, you have the weather and lightning to worry about. It is hard to focus on studying when you can’t decide whether you’re hot or cold, and even harder when you can’t even see your laptop screen.
1. sweet shop
I am very well aware I might quite a bit of backlash for this, but truly it had to be done. Now don’t get me wrong, I dream about that egg and cheese on a croissant, and their coffee is some of my favorite. Also, hypocritical as it may seem, living in Southgate as a freshman, I spent hours upon hours locked up in a booth learning about chemicals and cells. But it is because of the endless hours I have spent here that I can easily say that there are several, much better places to learn. Honestly, in my opinion, Sweet Shop is more of a hangover cure spot than it is a good place to study. The Wi-Fi is incredibly thready, I am constantly getting dropped from it. Their hours are something to consider as well. If you’re more of a night owl like myself, it might be difficult to pull a finals-week-all-nighter considering Sweet Shop closes at 5 p.m.
Everyone has their own study habits and what works best for them. These top three may be very controversial, but after two years of trial and error, I’ve learned that these are three places you will not find me during finals week.
Best of luck on finals everyone!
