Maude Latour is a newly rising indie-pop star who recently found fame thanks to the help of the social media platform TikTok. Her videos, which often feature her singing and sharing her music, increased in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic and have garnered millions of views. Thanks to her success on social media, she landed a major record deal with Warner Records and had the opportunity to play at the prominent music festival Lollapalooza.
Currently, some of her highest streamed videos on TikTok feature her promoting her songs Lola and Walk Backwards. In both tracks, Latour explores complex themes relating to personal relationships, her sexuality and the deep love connections she has for her friends. On Twitter, Latour further expands upon this idea of a ‘love-friend blur’ relationship. In her tweet, she argues that love is not a binary concept and instead is fluid.
Latour’s musical style creates a euphoric ambiance through her energetic production and starry-eyed lyricism. Her distinctive sound, which is highly reminiscent of artists like Marina and the Diamonds, Lorde and Phoebe Bridgers, is packed with dreamy riffs and striking lyrics. This lively energy that she infuses into her music oozes out of her whenever she is performing on stage. In an interview with the Alternative Press, she further comments on the atmosphere of her live shows by comparing them to rave parties. She also claims that these shows, as well as her fans, have created a very welcoming community for her.
As a recent graduate from Columbia University, she primarily focused her studies on philosophy and political science and worked on her music on the side as a form of self-expression. In her newest EP titled, 001, she has dedicated her time and energy to cultivating her voice and finding her niche within the pop-music industry. 001 stands out thematically from her other works because it embarks on more mature themes such as self-exploration and empowerment. On the other hand, in some of her past works, she concentrated more on the harsh realities of young love and the emotions related to the experience of heartbreak.
Her EP, 001, released on Sept. 30, features a total of seven songs: “001,” “Headphones,” “Lola,” “Trees,” “Probabilities,” “Living It” and “Cyclone.” All of the songs on her EP are currently available for streaming on all platforms.
