Finding a job post-graduation is already hard enough, and now we have to do it all virtually! Don’t worry though, there are so many sites and online resources for you to use on your job hunt. Just because things are going virtual and there is a lot of uncertainty, it does not mean you can’t still get online and get your dream job. The first few tips all start with working on your references and resources!
Work on your resume!
Having a great resume, especially in these virtual times, is so important! You should show off the skills you have learned at past jobs or the organizations you have been involved in. Being able to show leadership and teamwork is something that many employers are excited to learn more about. Try and show jobs that are relevant to what you are applying for, and make sure your resume looks clean and organized!
Take advantage of sites like LinkedIn, ZipRecruiter and Handshake.
These sites are completely free and allow you to send applications to jobs directly through them. Some only require you to submit a resume to the position and they will send it in! Make sure you create an impressive profile with a professional headshot and some convincing information in your biography. My personal favorite to use in LinkedIn. On LinkedIn, not only can you directly apply to a job, but you also have the ability to see and connect with current employees at the company and reach out to them with any questions you have.
Do your research on the company.
I’m sure you have been told this before, but it is necessary! Before you go into any interview, virtual or not, you need to do your research. Be prepared to answer questions about what you know or why you choose to apply. If you really want the position, these answers should come easily for you!
Dress like you want it.
We are all working from home and most likely stuck in sweatpants and an old t-shirt. Get up, get dressed and get professional! Make yourself feel like you are actually there for the interview. You want to make sure that you look and feel ready for the job no matter the current situation. It shows that you are resilient and ready to get to work. Throw a blazer on or even a nice blouse, just wear what makes you feel like you are about to get that job offer. Of course, since its virtual and your pants won’t be seen by anyone but you, sweatpants are acceptable.
Just because things might feel all over the place, there is no reason why you shouldn’t be trying to get that job. Take these tips as a start to where you are trying to get. Good luck on your virtual job hunt and remember to stay motivated!
