What to Expect from the Upcoming iPhone 12

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Apple is predicted to drop the latest addition to the iPhone family later this year, and with pressure to one-up their previous models, the tech giant is adding some interesting new features to the device.

Here is what you can expect from the next generation iPhone:

The iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max will be keeping the triple camera, while the standard version will keep the double lenses, similarly to the iPhone 11. However, one major change is the integration of a 3D camera. Unlike Face ID which uses a dot-projector-based system to map out a face, this feature uses a laser-based system that allows the user to scan their surroundings for up to 15 feet. With an increased depth perception, the new feature can be used to enhance portrait mode, as well as create an augmented reality, a selling point that Apple plans to expand on come launch time.

As for the body of the device, the iPhone is set to come out in three sizes. The iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max versions are set to come out at 6.1 and 6.7 inches respectively, making them larger than their iPhone 11 predecessors. There will also be a standard iPhone 12 that can come in a 5.8-inch or a 6.1-inch model. All three versions are predicted to be even thinner than the iPhone 11, decreasing in width from 8.1 millimeters to 7.4 millimeters.

Face ID and passcode options will be updated for this model. There are talks of improving Face ID, however, these improvements will be very small. The real upgrade comes with the reimplementation of Touch ID. Instead of holding a finger on the home button, the scanner will be integrated into the phone display, meaning that users simply have to hold their thumb anywhere on the screen and they can unlock their device. Allegedly, users will be able to use Face ID in conjunction with Touch ID for maximum security.

The final major difference is the implementation of 5G across all iPhone 12 models. 5G is significantly faster than its 4G counterpart, however, it has a shorter range and would not cover as much area in suburban settings. Due to the limited number of 5G networks, this feature will not be used as much at the initial launch of the phone. However, over time as 5G becomes more common, the phone will be able to handle the higher speeds that 5G offers, and people will find that their internet speeds are significantly faster.

The price range of the iPhone 12 has still not been released. However, there are speculations that it may be more costly than originally anticipated. Apple recently decreased the trade-in value of its older phones meaning that the new release may be out of customer’s budgets if they buy directly from the tech giant. There will still be discounted phone upgrades provided by mobile plans for this device.
