A Winter Style Guide: Brought to You by Jackie Burkhart From ‘That ‘70s Show’

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Waking up when it’s in the 20s, but feels like it’s in the teens. Trying to figure out what outfit to wear out that won’t leave you freezing to death, but won’t leave you dying when you go out to Recess or TENN.  And of course, the long treacherous, walk to class in what feels like you’re living in the Ice Age. Cold weather who? This isn’t our Tallahassee.

Sure, people from up north can handle the cold temperatures and think this weather is nothing but beautiful. But for most of us South Florida kids, we know that anything dropping down below 70 degrees is a sign that the tundra is coming. We’re used to crop tops and shorts, not an excessive number of layers. Being from Miami, I dread dressing for the cold, mostly because my closet is 90 percent suited for warmer weather. I’m used to 80 degrees and hotter, not below freezing temperatures. That may be an exaggeration, but I think everyone from South Florida can agree on that one. Dressing for the cold takes time and money; two things college students don’t have a lot of. Not only is dressing for the cold expensive, but there’s no in between with comfort and warmth with layers any time you step into a building. Luckily for us, we have the best style icon to look towards when it comes to this bipolar Tallahassee weather, Point Place’s very own Jackie Burkhart. If there’s anyone who can master the cold and still look fabulous, it’s her. Like Kelso once told her: we can’t control the weather, but we can at least try to look good dressing for it. So, if you’re struggling on what to wear on those cold days, take a couple of styling tips from this Wisconsin native to look cute and chic even in (what seems to us South Florida kids like) subfreezing temperatures.

1. Patterned Sweaters

If there’s anything Jackie Burkhart could pull off, it was her patterned sweaters.

2. Puffer Vest

For those days and nights that the cold isn’t too unbearable, a puffer vest will do the trick by keeping the core of your body warm. Pair it with a striped jacket for the ultimate Jackie Burkhart look.

3. Furry Jackets and Coats

A staple item for winter, furry jackets and coats will instantly become your new best friend.

4. Turtlenecks

Jackie always makes the turtleneck look so effortlessly cool. Pair it with a denim jacket, furry coat, or a puffer vest and you’ve got Jackie’s look down to a tee.

5. Berets and Beanies

Beanies, berets, you name it. Keeping our heads warm during the winter is crucial, so why not look fabulous doing it? Many stores like Urban Outfitters, Topshop, and even Free People are bringing back berets. Pair it with a cute little neck scarf and you’ll be looking like Jackie Burkhart in no time.
