7 Essentials For a “No-Makeup” Makeup Look

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GCU chapter.

When many people think of makeup they think of the full glam looks that involve contour, winged eyeliner, and Instagram brows. However, one makeup look that has taken the makeup industry by storm is the “no-makeup” makeup look. This natural, soft glam makeup look is harder to achieve than it seems and contrary to its name the “no-makeup” makeup look actually involves quite a bit of makeup. So, here is a list of some essential products to use if you are looking to step up your “no-makeup” makeup game.

1. Primer

A face primer is the first step in any successful makeup routine. Primers provide an easy and smooth base for all the following products and one can even purchase a primer that specifically fits their skincare needs. There are pore minimizing primers that minimize the appearance of pores and fine lines, mattifying primers to combat oily skin, hydrating primers to combat dry skin, and color correcting primers that corrects and counteracts redness and dark marks.

2. Concealer

Concealer is great for targeting specific spots on the skin. Using concealer underneath foundation or tinted moisturizers allows you to color correct and cover dark spots and redness. On the other hand, using a concealer on top of foundations or tinted moisturizers brightens the face.

3. Light Coverage

For a “no-makeup” makeup look it is important to stay away from heavy, liquid foundations and lean towards a light coverage product instead. Some great products to utilize are tinted moisturizers, BB creams, CC creams, or powder foundations. These products give a natural-looking complexion while covering imperfections and redness.

4. Cream Blush

Cream blush is best for a natural, glowing look. You can apply the blush with a tight brush or with your fingers depending on personal preference. Some fan favorite cream blushes are the Glossier Cloud Paint, the Colourpop Blush Stix, and the E.L.F Cosmetics Putty Blush.

5. Highlighter

The glow and shimmer on the cheekbones from highlighter gives the makeup look a radiant and dewy finish. Again with this product, it is best to use a cream or liquid to give off a more natural look that blends better into the products. Some great cream/liquid highlighters are Benefit Cosmetics High Beam Liquid Highlighter, the Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Glow, and the Colourpop Lite Stix.

6. Tinted Brow Gel

Those with natural full, bushy brows it is your time to shine! The “no-makeup” makeup look is all about embracing those beautiful thick brows, so all that is really needed is a clear or tinted brow gel to hold the brow’s shape all day long. However, if you have sparse or patchy brows (myself included) and need some more help getting fuller brows, you can always get a brow pencil to lightly fill in where needed.

7. Setting Spray

Finally the last step to any makeup routine: setting spray. Setting spray prolongs the life of your makeup look by keeping the makeup fresh longer. Like primers, there are also setting spray for all different skin types. There are mattifying setting sprays for oily skin, hydrating setting sprays for dry skin, radiance setting sprays for a dewy look, and even setting sprays with sunscreen to protect the skin from the damaging effects of the sun.
