Kata Magallan, eighteen, is a current GCU freshman with a passion for all things beauty. While she may be a forensic science major hailing from the small town of Kettleman City, California, Kata has big dreams of achieving a name for herself in the cosmetic community. A self-proclaimed “makeup enthusiast,” Kata’s makeup tutorials on her social media outlets such as Instagram and Snapchat are steadily gaining popularity. Not only do her jaw-dropping looks awe and inspire, Kata also turns heads with her charismatic personality and fun-loving attitude.
Q: When did you first become interested in makeup?
A: In fourth or fifth grade my mom worked for a department store kind of like a Macy’s. She would always bring home the leftover makeup products that the customers would sample but not end up buying. I would try out new looks and just play with the makeup. Ever since then, I just liked it. Another huge inspiration for me is the YouTuber, Nicole Guerrero. Her videos are the first tutorials I remember watching.
Q: Why are cosmetics so important to you?
A: Makeup is just something that I really enjoy doing. It can help boost my confidence and turn me into another person in a way. There are so many different looks and possibilities that you can do.
Q: Why did you decide to start making makeup tutorials?
A: It was definitely scary at first to start posting videos. People were always asking me questions about my looks so I eventually decided that it would just be easier to make a video. Even though it was hard at first, over time the positive reaction from my friends made me want to continue. People would ask me to try out a new look or a new product so I would go ahead and make another one.
Q: Have you ever gotten negative backlash on a video or a look? Do you have any advice for rising above the negativity?
A: You’re putting yourself out there every time you post something on the internet. When anybody has anything bad to say, you just have to brush it off your shoulders. You have to take the bad with the good. I get more positive reviews than negative so I just pay attention to the people that love and support me. Those opinions are the one that matter.
Q: Plans for the future?
A: I’m majoring in forensic science and one day I definitely want to be a mortician. Someday though I’d like to open up my own beauty bar of some kind. I’d also like to learn how to do services such as putting in eyelash extensions!
Kata is definitely one to watch! With an ambition like hers, someday she might join the ranks of YouTube’s most watched beauty gurus.
