The 2018 Women’s March took place on Saturday January 20th, 2018. Many women gathered in different cities across the United States to protest for women’s rights. More than 120,000 women marched in New York alone. Women march for multiple reasons- either personal or for other women. There are many specific causes that different individuals march in support of. Some of these causes include: reproductive rights, worker rights, civil rights, disability rights, and environmental justice. Ultimately, they march for their voices to be heard. We need to create an environment where all women are free to care for their families in healthy environments, free from any barriers.
The reproductive rights of women are rights that there should be no restrictions on healthcare, birth control, HIV/AIDS prevention and care, or accurate sex education. Women should have access to all of these things regardless of their income, location, or their education. As women, we deserve easy access to all of these things. We should not have to worry about stereotypes, expectations, or worry about following gender norms. We should have the right to control our bodies the way that we want. Those are our LGBTQIA rights. In addition, all women should have the same rights as men when it comes to the workplace; it is their workers right. All women should be paid as equally as men and should be given sick days, healthcare, pay for family leave, and work in a healthy environment. There are rights that are not thought of as often, such as disability rights. Women with disabilities have the right to be included and accepted in every aspect of society. They have the right to enjoy their culture and enjoy being an American.
Women were not only fighting for things like worker rights, LGBTQIA rights, and reproductive rights, they were also fighting for their civil rights. They were fighting for their freedom of speech, voting rights, and protection as a human, as an American, and as a woman. They were fighting for their freedom of expression, freedom of worship without harassment or intimidation. They should not fear worship in public areas and should be their right to express themselves through their beliefs. They fought for the protection of their environment and that the environment should not be taken advantage of, especially by corporate companies. Our environment should be kept safe and intact for our safety and health, not just for women and humans, but for living creatures.
Many women across the nation, and even around the world participated in this enormous, and empowering event. They marched for their civil rights and human rights. They marched to be treated as equals to men, not as if they are lesser than men. It gave women the opportunity to come together and fight for the rights that they deserve instead of fighting against each other. This event gave them an opportunity to speak their minds and not only fight for themselves, but for all of their sisters, mothers, daughters and loved ones as well.
