Now that the season of popsicles and root beer floats is over, it’s time to start searching for a new favorite treat to obsess over this autumn. Baking cookies is one of the easiest ways to make your apartment smell good and make your roommates happy. You do not need to be a world-class baker in order to enjoy some delicious fall treats either; even if your experience with baking is minimal, trying out a new recipe can be just as fun as eating the finished product, and there’s no shame in buying already made treats either! Whether you’re looking for recipe inspirations or a list of cookies to look for at the next student market, these are the top 4 cookies to look out for this autumn.

Pumpkin Spice cookies

Seemingly everyone waits with bated breath for pumpkin spice to take over the world each year. From candles to coffee to body sprays, pumpkin spice is one of the most iconic scents and flavors to come out of autumn. Pumpkin spice cookies are a result of this newfound obsession. These sweet and tangy cookies are definitely a great way to branch out and try something new if you’ve already been around the block with pumpkin spice. If you’re a baker, you probably already have most of the ingredients necessary to make these; the only things you’d need to grab at the store are some pumpkin spice and canned pumpkin puree! And if you’re looking for something a little sweeter, try adding cinnamon cream cheese frosting for that little something extra.

Hot Chocolate Cookies

It might not get below freezing in Phoenix, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy some hot chocolate and cookies on the days when the average temperature isn’t in the triple digits. Hot chocolate cookies have the best elements of both cookies and hot chocolate; most recipes even call for hot chocolate mix! On top of that, chocolate chips and baby marshmallows work together to make a gooey, sweet, beautiful mess of a cookie. You can eat it with or without a cup of hot chocolate (though for the chocolate lovers reading this, it’s an absolute no-brainer). The best part of these cookies? You can keep enjoying these all throughout the winter too!

Snickerdoodles

While for some people these are cookies that are eaten year-round, the sweet cinnamon and butter taste land them firmly in this list of fall cookies. The thing that separates these cookies from other cookies is that they can be either crispy or chewy; this, of course, depends on the recipe, so make sure to double-check which kind you’re getting before starting the baking process or checking out at the store.  The only out-of-the-ordinary ingredient for most recipes is cream of tartar, which can be fixed by a quick trip to the grocery store!

Butter Pecan Cookies

To round off this list, butter pecan cookies are one of the most autumn-coded cookies there are. The very first step in most recipes is toasting the pecans, so if you want your apartment to smell heavenly without having to light a candle, this is the cookie for you! Butter, brown sugar, and (of course) pecans work together to make this cookie one of the richest and nuttiest cookies out there. Even if you’re not a fan of the store-bought pecan pie that someone inevitably brings to Thanksgiving every year, you still might enjoy these chewy cookies. Don’t hesitate to try these or any of the other cookies on this list if you see them at the next student market or farmer’s market; they might just become your new favorite autumn treat!
