The show is about a wealthy family (the Rose’s) who lose everything. After they lose everything, the only thing the family still possesses is a town named Schitt’s Creek. The family had only bought Schitt’s creek as a joke. Yet, Schitt’s Creek ends on being the only thing they have left. As a last resort, the Rose family moves to Schitt’s Creek to begin their new penniless life.
The Rose’s are spoiled and funny in their lack of knowledge of how normal people live. Moira is Johnny’s wife, the former soap opera star who lives for luxury and wigs. In a world so different from the one she’s used to, Moira does surprisingly well in Schitt’s creek. Johnny is business savvy and takes his knowledge to transform the hotel he owns. The Rose’s adult children, Alexis and David are extravagant and unused to spending so much time with their parents.
It’s the Rose’s loss of everything that makes them grow closer. The show is warm and funny. Moira, for all of her extravagances and soap opera stories, grows into a warm and caring character. Alexis and David, for how much they get on each other’s nerves, care for one another and are there for each other. Johnny’s loss of Rose Video leads him to transform the hotel and, in the process, he becomes a friend to Stevie, his co-worker. Stevie is also transformed by the Rose family. For how unused she was to being close to other people, she ends on caring about the Rose’s like they are her family. In turn, Stevie becomes like the fifth member of the family.
The people that live in Schitt’s Creek are amused when the Rose’s first arrive in town. The viewers have a similar approach, how will the Rose’s adjust to this new situation? How will they cope with losing everything? Will they stay in Schitt’s Creek or leave? All of these questions get answered throughout the 5 seasons. What is remarkable is that the characters grow so much throughout the show, but they still retain the qualities that make them them.
Moira’s love for wigs does not cease. Alexis’ use of the word, “Ew David!” does not stop, neither does Johnny’s business savvy or David’s humor. It’s amazing to see how the characters adjust to Schitt’s Creek while not compromising who they are.
The Rose’s lost everything but gained everything at the same time. If you want to watch a heartwarming, funny show, with interesting characters and locals, then this show is for you.
