It’s that time of year again — finals season is upon us. Although our virtual semester is coming to an end, the holidays are just around the corner. When it comes to finding a balance between preparing for both, our minds can easily become cluttered and add on extra stress we definitely don’t need during this time of the year.Â
Below are some tips and tricks to beat the busiest time of the year while still enjoying our favorite holidays!
Make a Schedule
I think most of us can agree that assignments and exams creep up VERY quickly towards the end of the semester, especially if you’re already behind. When it comes to balancing your academic and personal life, making a schedule is key. Not only does it help our minds declutter, but can also reduce the amount of stress you have as you don’t have to remember a list in your head.Â
Personally, I love making a color-coded schedule towards the end of the semester and organizing my lists. For example, I tend to keep assignments and important college dates in one color, then personal and social life events in another. If you find yourself way too busy to begin preparing for the holidays towards the end of the semester, create a schedule following your classes and then for holiday festivities.Â

Get Involved- But Not Too InvolvedÂ
If you’re like me, sometimes we tend to pick up too many things at once. From work, study groups, social (safe) outings and campus organizations, sometimes it’s almost impossible to balance everything at the end of the year.Â
When I find myself “overbooked” with events and activities, I tend to either get all of my work done at the beginning of the week or sacrifice a few activities that aren’t as important and won’t hurt to miss. Although it may be disappointing to cancel going out with a friend, sometimes other obligations such as grades and organizational meetings are more important. Â
Make a List of PrioritiesÂ
Priorities are SO important when it comes to final exams and the holidays. Not only do we have to focus on assignments and studying, but also preparing for family gatherings and celebrating.Â
To make sure I can do both, a list of priorities will always come in handy and keep yourself in check. To do this, I recommend compiling a few non-negotiables and negotiables. For example, non-negotiables for one week may be finishing a final assignment and holiday shopping for family, whereas a negotiable may be skipping a workout for the day. We all have different obligations and priorities, but make sure you can find your balance between work and social life.Â

Take EXTRA Care of Yourself

After a long stressful week, it is essential to practice self-care. Although it is important to always treat yourself, it is especially needed during the end of the year. Taking extra care of yourself will reduce stress, anxiety, and make you feel at ease when you need it the most.
 Take a hot bubble bath. Put on a face mask. Have a holiday movie night. Be with your friends and family.Â
Spend Time with Your Loved Ones
At the end of each day, our friends and family will always be here for us. Throughout 2020, we’ve learned to cherish those around us more than ever. From decorating to eating together, make sure to always spend time with those around you and unwind. When times get rough, turn towards those who love you for endless support.
