Breast Cancer Awareness: Show Your Shades of Pink

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at George Mason University chapter.
October is the month of candy corn, horror films and Halloween costumes.  Although these aspects of the fall season deem to be at the top of our lists, October more importantly is the month of Breast Cancer Awareness. Many of us have been affected in some way by this harrowing disease that has taken the lives of millions of women throughout the world. If you have been fortunate enough not to have ever had a personal tie to breast cancer, there are ample ways to show your support for those who have, and for women in general. If you are unable to participate in a walk, run, campaign or donate to a specific fund, there are alternatives to demonstrate your support.
Being a woman translates to empowerment. We illustrate strength, courage and affection on a daily basis, as well as confidence and fashion forwardness. For those of us who are not directly connected to breast cancer or are short on time, there are still ways to become a benefactor to this cause.Top designers and companies have offered limited editions to their most popular items in which a generous amount of the proceeds go to women’s research centers.  It may be the simplest way to put your money towards a noteworthy cause. By adding a chic pair of flats or a shade of pink lipstick to your daily attire, you could be helping to save someones life. In honor of all the style mavens who have worked to bring awareness to this devastating disease, I encourage you to fuel your shopping addictions in order to benefit others. Add a t-shirt to your collection and buy one for a friend as well. It is the little things we can do to unite and advocate for such a deserving cause. I’ll leave you with the inspiring words of Martina McBride, “this one’s for the girls.”
