Although Courtney Schooley’s time at Mason is coming to a close as a senior, she is definitely leaving a name for herself. On top of being an excellent student and an active member of her sorority, Alpha Phi, she is now one of the first hosts for Morning Mason, GMU’s live streamed internet show! She has taken some time to sit down with HC GMU to give us an interview before she becomes famous.
How did you first get involved with Morning Mason?
I volunteered to be in a Mason holiday commercial as a part of one of my class requirements, and I met a very talented individual named Josh Kruse. He was doing behind-the-scenes stuff, and I told him what I was majoring in communication with a concentration in media and that I was interested in working on a project related to my concentration. He then referred me to Taylor Davis; she was producing a new show called “Morning Mason” and needed some more people in her cast. I auditioned and fell in love with it, andI’m very lucky to work with such an awesome crew.
Do you get nervous on camera?
Every time. It was a little harder last semester because we didn’t have a teleprompter. I was doing sports, and sometimes the scores would not come in until the night before. I would have to stay up a lot later than I anticipated writing my script. This semester is going to be even better now that we’ve worked on ironing out the kinks!
What advice would you give to other women who are looking to get involved on campus?
Check out an activities fair, see all the options, and do a little of your own research! There are so many successful organizations at Mason, but I’ve found a lot of happiness and success in my sorority. I realize it’s not for everyone, but I would definitely recommend that any women who want to get involved also look at going Greek!
We know you’re very busy, but you always look so put together. What is your go to outfit when you’re in a rush?
I like to be comfy while still attempting to look fashion-forward, but my go-to outfit for this season is skinny jeans, boots, and a warm sweater. I am very ready for sundress season though!
Who is your biggest fashion icon?
My mom actually. She’s a colonel in the Air Force, so she normally wears a uniform. But when she is not in uniform, she always dresses in her own style with a classy flare.
What are you post graduation plans?
I would be very lucky if I could get an internship that leads to a job at a television station or network. That is something I would love to do in the future!
