If you are anything like me, the thought of going to the doctor causes you to run and hide in terror. I recently took my first solo trip to the doctor due to the near constant push of my mother and I’m glad I did. As young women in college, we’re worried about a lot of things, but our physical health should be one of them. I created some tips that helped me overcome my disdain for doctors offices and had to share them! Via Giphy
Know your family history
Going to the doctor for an annual regular check-up and physical can give you a sense of how your health is as you age. Something that recently impacted my health was finding out my family’s health history. After speaking with my parents, I found out that certain conditions that have been in my family for generations may impact my life and health. If you know what runs in your family or things that have affected your family’s health in the past then it could help you better know your own health.
Be honest with your doctor.
If you know you haven’t been to the gym in 3 months and you celebrate “Thirsty Thursday” every single Thursday, let your doctor know that. The doctors office should be a no judgement zone since everyone is there for your best interest. Doctors are there to help, but they’re working off of information you give them. Don’t lie about the gym membership that you pay for and never use. Via Giphy
Your look does not determine your health
While weight can sometimes impact your health, it does not automatically mean you are unhealthy. Your biggest concern should be your overall health and how you are feeling. If your doctor does suggest a change in lifestyle, try to stick with it and offer yourself incentives for achieving certain goals.
