One thing I’ve learned about college is that it presents itself with a reason to dress up—almost every weekend. Brainstorming costume ideas becomes the weekly norm. Students spend hours gathering materials and outrageous items in hopes of having the best outfit. Of course, certain weekends are more important that others. Cinco de Mayo, St. Pattie’s Day and Christmas are at the top of the list…but Halloween takes the cake as the #1 contender. American’s go wild at the end of October, choosing different outfits for each night, sometimes needing upwards of 3 or 4 get-ups. Mean Girls glorifies it as, “the one night a year when a girl can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it.” Now, I’m not encouraging anyone to dress like a floozy, but Cady Heron does know a thing or two about Girl World.
As October arrives, it’s time to start thinking about your choice of costume. Girls are already sweating about their plans, wondering who will throw the best party. Events such as Nightmare on M Street are already selling tickets, preparing for madness in The District. Often, the best costume ideas stem from pop-culture. Posing as celebrities or stars from the hottest TV shows tend to be fan favorites. I have chosen a few of my favorite couples costumes to ensure that you’re the best-dressed duo anywhere you choose to go…
· Don & Betty Draper (AMC’s Mad Men)
· Kanye & Kim
· Dexter & Deb (Showtime’s Dexter)
· Gotye & Kimba
· Adam & Eve (outfits courtesy of American Apparel)
When prepping for the craziest time of year, remember that the best costumes aren’t always the most expensive. Terrible, polyester costumes purchased at stores like iParty are often just that—terrible. Don’t be afraid to get creative and push the envelope a little bit. If you and your partner-in-crime dress to impress Regina George and the rest of the Plastics, you’ll probably win the costume contest.
