In honor of November 8th, here are eight things you can do in the next week to participate in the 2016 Election! Even if you’re not old enough or ineligible to vote, you can still make an impact.
- VOTE! This one is obvious, if you haven’t registered yet, do it. It’s your civic responsibility. If voting in person, make sure you have the necessary forms of identification. If sending in an absentee ballot, mail it in time.
- Do your research. Inform yourself about major party candidates and their issues before voting. Be sure you know what you’re voting for before heading to the polling place or filling out your absentee ballot. This election is about much more than Clinton/ Trump for many states and regions. Do your research on local candidates and ballot initiatives before you vote.
- Canvas/call for your candidate. See personal websites for specific guidelines on how to do so. Most candidates’ websites also have a place for you to sign up to make phone calls.
- Register to be a poll worker. See here for guidelines.
- Volunteer as a driver. Many regions have trouble mobilizing voters because of poor public transportation. Sign up to drive people to the voting booth!
- Sign up to register unregistered voters. Though in some cases it may be too late to organize a voter registration drive, see the American Association of University Women’s guidelines here.
- Donate. Clinton, Trump, and many local nominees are still accepting campaign donations on their websites.
- Spread the word! Remind your friends and peers to vote on social media. Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram are great ways to mobilize voters and keep people involved in the days before the election.
