The 9 Best YA Series You’ve Never Heard Of

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgetown chapter.

We have all heard of The Hunger Games, Divergent, and The Maze Runner, but there are quite a few other series that YA lovers should be reading, too.

1. The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

“Singing mice and glass slippers are replaced with snarky androids and mechanical feet in this richly imagined and darkly subversive retelling of Cinderella.” (BCCB)

Cinder is a gifted mechanic and cyborg. She needs to unravel the mysteries of her past in order to determine her future. For fans of dystopia and reimagined fairy tales, this series will certainly be for you.

2. Young Elites by Marie Lu

“By permitting her characters some grand failures, she raises the stakes in the best way possible…There is clearly more to know, and I look forward to it. This is a world worth revisiting.” (The New York Times Book Review)

This book series needs to gain attention in the mainstream media among readers. For fans of dystopian literature book, this a must read. Readers who are not fans of the typical YA heroines, Adelina is your new favorite character. This book has a darkness and grittiness to it that is different than other YA series.

3. Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

“Mafi combines a psychological opener with an action-adventure denouement in her YA debut. This is a gripping read from an author who’s not afraid to take risks.” (Publishers Weekly)

Juliette cannot touch anyone, otherwise she will kill them. The Reestablishment wants to utilize her power, but Juliette needs to decide if she wants to be a weapon or a warrior.

4. Crimson Bound by Rosamund Hodge

“Plot twists and romance keep the pages turning in this grim and intricate take on the classic tale.” (Booklist)

Inspired by Little Red Riding Hood, Crimson Bound creates a dark world where Rachelle is forced to kill creatures and protect the king’s son, Armand.

5. The Selection by Kiera Cass

At this point in time, you may have heard about The Selection Series, which is a combination of The Hunger Games series and ABC long-running reality series The Bachelor. I wanted to include it in the list because the CW just bought the rights to the story and may be turning it into your new TV obsession.

The complete series is available in a box set on Amazon.

The series continues with America Singer’s daughter in The Heir.

6. The Ruby Red Trilogy by Kerstin Gier

“Sixteen-year-old Londoner Gwyneth Shepherd comes from a family of time travelers. The gene was supposed to have skipped Gwen, but sneaks up on her unexpectedly in the middle of class one day and hurls her way back to the 18th century, where she meets an insufferable-turns-lovable time-traveling boy named Gideon.” (TeenVogue.com)

Who doesn’t love a time-travel story? The book will keep you on your toes, too.

7. The Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

“[A] breath-catching romantic fantasy about destiny, hope and the search for one’s true self.” (The New York Times Book Review)

The write-up for this story is really intriguing, black handprints appearing on doorways, the devil’s need for human teeth, and a young art student, whose natural color hair is bright blue, gets caught up in this mystical war.

8. The Matched Trilogy by Ally Condie

“The hottest YA title to hit bookstores since The Hunger Games.” (Entertainment Weekly)

In line with the current dystopian trend, Cassia lives in a society where there are strict rules that she must obey. When she is paired with Xander at her society’s Matching ceremony (because that is how this society dictates one finds love), the screen then shows a second face. Needless to say society’s infalliability is called into question after that “mix-up.”

9. The Legend Trilogy by Marie Lu

“Taut and exciting.” (The Los Angeles Times)

The United States isn’t the same place we know it to be in this dystopian series. The Republic rules the land and the citizens tend to be either really wealthy or extraordinarily poor. When June, an elite, meets Day, after her brother is murdered, their lives are never the same.
