Dining in the District: Kafe Leopold

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgetown chapter.

As a college student living on a college time schedule where weekend nights conclude around 3 am and the day doesn’t begin much before 11, breakfast is often unrealistic and undesirable. But as many of my friends agree, skipping straight to lunch is just as unfulfilling. For this reason, God invented the beloved Brunch.

I was reminded of my love for brunch recently while my mom was in town for a visit—a visit that equated to a much-needed break from Leo’s and the chance to eat out in Georgetown.

Our favorite stop during our mini stay-cation was Kafe Leopold located in Cady’s Alley mere steps from M Street. While it is known for its European—more specifically, Austrian—pastries, we were in the mood for more substantial fare. We splurged and decided to try the special lemon soufflé pancakes with berry compote and the artichoke, sundried tomato and kale omelet special.

While a bit dense for something called “soufflé”, the pancakes were absolutely delicious! The lemon added a tartness that cut through the sweetness of the jam perfectly—a combination that rendered the side of maple syrup unnecessary.

The omelet (a bit heartier than those I have become accustomed to at Leo’s…) was also wonderful. The use of artichokes and sundried tomatoes were an interesting take on your typical veggie omelet and the addition of the kale (my new favorite super food) had us sold. The mixed greens side salad with acidic vinaigrette was a great pairing with the side of richly seasoned potatoes that we shared.

To finish off our decadent meal, we split a pain au chocolat (aka buttery, flaky croissant injected with a burst of bittersweet chocolate) and coffee.

While on the pricy side for a student’s budget, Kafe Leopold is a great place to take out-of-towners or reallocate weekend dinner funds to shake-up your weekly routine. With very minimalist décor, an effortless European atmosphere, and a great patio for outdoor eating in the nice weather, Kafe Leopold is the perfect choice when looking to rekindle your love of brunch.
