How to Survive the Gym: After New Year’s

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgetown chapter.

As everyone knows, New Year’s is the time of year where everyone makes his or her resolutions for the rest of the year. It’s safe to say that 99% of people resolve to get in shape, lose weight, exercise more, etc. Thus, this leads to the inevitable “gympocalypse.” The gym is about to get crazy.

The New Year’s resolutioners flood the gym following the holidays in attempts to burn off all the holiday indulgences. Suddenly, the ellipticals, treadmills, and weight machines are all being used and the exercise classes are booked. And all the gym regulars are scowling at the sudden influx of gym attendees. If you’re one of the regulars that can’t stand the gym after New Year’s, here are some alternatives to avoid the madness while still staying in shape.

1.   Go Swimming

Even though the gym is filled to maximum capacity the week following New Year’s, generally the pool does not get as crowded. Swimming is a great total-body workout, low impact, and doesn’t require equipment.

2.   At home workouts

There are so many YouTube videos available for free that you don’t need a gym to do. Most workouts require little to no equipment and all you really need is a soft surface, like a yoga mat or a carpet. You can use online videos or workout DVDs.

3.   Sign up for classes earlier

If you’re the type of person to take a workout class instead of independent workout at the gym, you better sign up early. Claim your spot.

Let’s be real, the chaos after New Year’s simmers down after a couple of weeks as people start dropping out. Soon, the gym will be back to normal.
