The 24-hour news cycle provides a lot of information on everything from the latest issue Congress is debating to which celebrity was best dressed at the Oscars, and almost everything imaginable in between. For busy college students, it is hard to keep track of everything happening in this very connected, technology driven-world. The next time your professor or a friend mentions Crimea or the budget deficit, avoid the confused blank stare by staying in the know with theSkimm.

theSkimm is a website started by Danielle Weisberg and Carly Zakin which sends daily e-mail newsletters sifting out the most important and newsworthy stories for you. Weisberg and Zakin met studying abroad in Rome and worked together in DC later for NBC News. They left NBC to start theSkimm in New York, and have been helping college students and young professionals stay up to date. They do the reading for you and explain it with fresh editorial content, breaking down what you need to know to stay informed and conversational. The newsletters include the links to any news articles the founders took information from if you want further information.

Zakin and Weisberg said that their journey has taken “a lot of guts, and white wine, for us to make theSkimm a reality”. This simplifying resource takes the stories covering politics, international affairs, sports, entertainment, technology, etc. and condenses them to benefit their subscribers so they don’t fall behind in the world of discussing current events.

Georgetown has two student representatives for theSkimm, Chloe Fross (SFS ’16) and Kristina Micalizzi (SFS ’16), who both felt the need to remain on top of the daily news to keep up in class discussions and talks among students. As School of Foreign Service students, Chloe and Kristina signed up for the Foreign Policy morning briefing and are entertained by its entirety, finding them extremely helpful in keeping up to date with all of the international affairs they discuss in their classes.

To sign up for theSkimm, simply head to www.theskimm.com, and subscribe! If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact theSkimm’s representatives Chloe (ccf37@georgetown.edu) and Kristina (ksm48@georgetown.edu)!
