Student Media is not only a student organization on Georgia Southern University’s campus but a hub for creative students looking to gain professional experience. Our motto is “Student-led, Student read,” and the students who work here strive for excellence in their respective fields and truly find valuable skills necessary for the future job market.
There are six different areas of professional development offered by Student Media: creative, digital, newspaper, magazines, marketing, and business. The students involved in this award-winning organization are solely responsible for everything that goes into both creating and distributing The George-Anne newspaper and several magazines.
To someone who isn’t familiar with Student Media, what is it?
Student Media is an organization that allows students who have interests such as journalism, videography, designing, advertising, and marketing & PR to use their skills and talents to not only create quality products but also share them with the campus. Student Media currently consists of 6 divisions. The George-Anne Newspaper, Reflector Magazine, The Circle GSU and Creative produce content. The remaining divisions (Marketing and Business) do the behind the scenes work that allows the rest of the divisions to work effectively.
How is Student Media important to our campus?
Student Media allows the student body to know what is happening on campus and the surrounding area. It also helps students on campus to be more connected to each other. The George-Anne does an amazing job of distributing two papers a week that discuss hard-hitting news that happens around campus. Reflector Magazine pushes out daily online content that discusses Georgia Southern culture, and a print lifestyle magazine each semester. The Circle GSU does daily digital video content that covers an array of campus topics including trends, student & faculty, and sports. Student Media makes it so each student can relate to what they watch and read. The products of each division give the students an endless amount of ways to be connected to the campus and their surrounding peers.
What is your job within Student Media?
I am the current Content Editor for The Circle GSU. My job not only includes managing what the reporters produce, but also posting their videos to our website thecirclegsu.com, and all of our social media outlets. I meet with the reporters and the Digital Editor-in-Chief at the beginning of the week, and we plan what we are going to cover for the next week, whether it be a football practice report, a skit or a video where we go ask students about a trending topic.
How would someone get involved with Student Media?
At the beginning of each semester, Student Media holds an interview session that allows students who are interested in joining to apply. Once accepted, the students then go through a training program that allows students to work within the division of their choice. The candidates then work alongside the current staff members, learning how to work in their selected division. Each division has its own program to fit the needs of the staff and the products/content created.
