The week everyone has been waiting for is finally here: Homecoming! The week of homecoming is a treat in itself. There are so many traditions and festivities to engage in. Events start off Monday, October 12th, and are filled with friendly competitions, the return of alumni’s, countless social gathers, and who can forget the infamous parade? The theme for this year’s homecoming is Viva Las Southern. If you haven’t participated in anything on campus yet, this is the week to venture out and get to know your fellow Eagles.
Your vote counts! So don’t forget to vote for Homecoming King & Queen, Duke and Duchess on MyInvolvement! Voting will end on Thursday, October 15th, 2015. Crowning for King and Queen will take place during halftime at Saturday’s game.Â
Some of the activities that will take place for homecoming this week include:
Monday:
T-Shirt Swap: From 12:00-1:00 PM: Bring an old non-Georgia Southern collegiate t-shirt to the Rotunda, and in exchange you’ll get a new 2015 Homecoming t-shirt. How cool is that? You’re donating to charity, and receiving a new shirt in return. Bring your Eagle ID! This event will take place up until Thursday. Same time, every day. Don’t miss out on your opportunity!
Also there is GSU Idol! It’s only $5 in advance but don’t worry if you haven’t bought a ticket yet, it’s only $7 at the door. This event will take place at 7:00 PM in the Russell Union Ballroom.
Tuesday:
Sculpt-It for the Food Bank: Various organizations compete with other organizations to win spirit points. Organizations will create a sculpture that’s related to the homecoming theme “Viva Las Southern.” The best part though, throughout all this fun, every canned item will be donated to the Statesboro Food Bank. This event will be held in the Russel Union Commons from 11:00 AM-2:00 PM.
Tuesday night, Comedian Tony Rock will be performing at the Hanner Fieldhouse at 7:00 PM. He is the younger brother of comedian Chris Rock. Talent obviously runs in the family. Come out and get your laugh on. This event is free to students with their Eagle ID!!!
Wednesday:
Doo-Dah Dance and Step Show will take place at the Hanner Fieldhouse at 7:00 PM. It’s only $1 to attend. Student organizations, dance groups, Sororities, and Fraternities will compete for spirit points and prizes! This is one event that you don’t want to miss!!! 7:00 pm (doors open at 6:00 pm)
Thursday:
Screaming Eagles is a lip syncing competition that will be held at the Williams Center Multipurpose Room at 7:00 PM. 12 groups will perform, and the winning team will take home a $100/per team member. Come out and get entertained. Don’t forget to bring your Eagle ID!Â
True Blue BBQ will be held at the Russel Union Rotunda from 11:00 AM-12:30 PM. Student organizations will compete to showcase their BBQ chicken skills. Make sure to come out and support your Eagles!
Friday:
The parade will begin at 4:00 PM in Parking Lot 42 and end at Sweetheart Circle. Student organizations, campus departments, and community members will showcase their floats, krazy kars, and characters. Following the parade, a special celebration is held at Sweetheart Circle that will include food, games, and even more activities. Winners of the spirit point competition will take place as well as the Crowning of the Duke and Duchess.Â
The game will be held on Saturday, October 17th, 2015 at the Paulson Stadium. The Georgia Southern Eagles vs. New Mexico State Aggies. Come out and support Eagle Nation. Whose House? Our House!!!
