How I Deal With My Dry Skin

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgia Southern chapter.

In this day and age, everyone seems to be paying close attention to their skin and trying to find the best methods to care for it, which is a good thing, of course. Personally, I have dry skin and it can get so bad to the point where dry patches will develop, not a good look. Because of that, I have to be careful as to what I put on my face especially when it comes to makeup. Having dry skin can be so annoying and uncomfortable and it only worsens once winter approaches. Overtime, I have learned what works for me, so here are some basic tips that may inspire you.

  1. Wash your face daily with a safe, gentle facial cleanser. I personally use Burt’s Bees hydrating cleanser.
  2. Use warmer water rather than hot. Hot water can strip away your natural moisture, leaving your skin feeling dry.
  3. Exfoliate. I exfoliate 2-3 times a week. Exfoliating is great for removing the top layer of dry, dead skin. I use a store-bought oatmeal and honey scrub, but you can easily make your own scrub. You will notice the difference after your first use.
  4. Moisturize your face immediately after washing. I avoid drying lotions and instead use coconut oil, natural shea butter and I have recently tried out rose oil with pretty good results.
  5. Try to avoid facial products and makeup that contain alcohol, the most drying ingredient.
  6. Drink Water. This is the most cliché tip, I know. The fact is we must hydrate ourselves from the inside out. Dehydration will have a negative impact on your skin, so try to increase your daily water intake.

The best thing to do is test some waters and decide what works best for you. I’m no skin expert, but I do believe we can learn from each other. We put our skin through a lot, especially when walking to classes in this unforgiving heat where we are sweating and all the not so good stuff has contact with our skin. Hopefully, I have encouraged you to try something different or enhance your already-established skin care routine. Dry skin, your time is up.
