I love Christmas just as much as the next person. What I don’t love, however, are the Christmas radios that play the same few songs sung by different people. There’s no sense of originality or uniqueness in a lot of popular Christmas songs, which is why I decided to compile a list of some Christmas songs that you may not have heard before.
- have u – awfultune
-
“have u” is a sweet Christmas song that recalls the joy surrounding Christmas morning as a kid. It then shifts to the current day, where the singer affectionately states, “I know this Christmas / I’ll have you. / I don’t need presents under my tree / Or friends and family / ‘Cause I have you.” It’s a gentle ukulele ballad carried by awfultune’s stunning vocals.
- Christmas guitar – Chris Farren
-
Chris Farren’s album Like a Gift From God or Whatever is filled with original Christmas songs including “Christmas Guitar.” I particularly like this one because it’s upbeat and follows the relatable theme of wanting one main thing from Christmas. Despite the repetitiveness of the lyrics, the fun guitar and layering of vocals make it more exciting and enjoyable.
- White Winter Hymnal – Fleet Foxes
-
“White Winter Hymnal” is one of my favorite Wintertime songs. Although it is not actually a Christmas song, it has become a popular Wintertime classic, through covers by the likes of Pentatonix on their Christmas album That’s Christmas to Me. The song itself is fairly morbid, discussing the death of a character named Michael, but the theme is contrasted by the light and upbeat melody.
- I Believe In Santa Claus – Dr. Dog
-
“I Believe in Santa Claus” is a sweet Christmas song off of Dr. Dog’s Oh My Christmas Tree EP. It features the iconic Christmas bells, coupled with a jazzy piano and electric guitar. The singer’s voice also fits the iconic sound of Midwest Emo, which is one of my favorite genres of music.
- Happy Holidays, You B*stard – blink-182
-
Of course, I had to include an emo Christmas song, though I must warn you, “Happy Holidays, You B*stard” has many expletives. It’s an upbeat and funny song that I highly recommend listening to if you don’t mind vulgar language.
