5 Perfect Things to Keep in Your Room That Will Make You Smile

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Gettysburg chapter.

No matter how busy you are, your room will be the place you return to at the end of the day. It’s where you unwind before falling asleep. It’s the first thing you see in the morning. It’s the space that you have the most control over.  So, it can be pretty important to keep things around that make you happy and give you a sense of home. Here are a few things that can help create a space that is more home than dorm:

1. A plant

The magical thing about having a plant is that besides just adding color and life, it gives a sense of accomplishment. This is a thing with life that depends on you, and look! It’s doing just fine.

Now, to be sure, a lot of people don’t have green thumbs. But the plant world is huge and diverse. Get a plant that fits YOU. I personally prefer cacti, and my aloe Jasper (pictured above) is super difficult to kill. A friend of mine prefers flowers.

If these don’t work then try some bamboo or an air plant. Like to cook? Try an herb to use while cooking. There are limitless possibilities.

2. Art

Posters from your favorite TV show are great, but the amazing thing about art is how ambiguous it is. Find a piece of artwork that makes you happy, confused, or even just that one feeling you can’t name, but can feel wiggling around behind your heart. Not only will it look super good on your walls, it will make you feel more adult because you own a piece of art.

3. A stuffed animal

Maybe you thought you’d give up Mr. Snuggins forever, but think again! For all those times when you just need that extra little level of comfort or even just need something to prop your pillow up when you have a cold, a stuffed animal is great to have around. And trust me, it’s not as uncommon as you think.

4. Personal reminders

Like the above, this can be anything. Have younger siblings? Bring a drawing they made for you. Went on an amazing trip? Bring that souvenir you loved. Got a gift you received that means a lot to you? Bring it! These little physical reminders are amazing because they’re something you can put on a desk just glance at now and then but they’re also physical things you can hold in your hand if you need something more to remind you of home.

5. Your role model

Whether a picture or an autograph or a work that they’ve created, bring something that reminds you of a person who inspires you. Make sure to put it somewhere you’re going to look at it. A lot. That little bit of inspiration works wonders when you’re floundering over big decisions or unease.
