Campus Cutie: Gillian Minnerly

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Gettysburg chapter.

Gillian (pronounced Jillian, not like the gill on a fish…) has grabbed the attention of Her Campus at Gettysburg, and after interviewing her I can see why!  Gillian is a Junior here at the Burg and balances her Pre-law studies with her Political Science major and Spanish minor effortlessly.  Unlike other students, Gillian decided to study abroad in the fall semester of her sophomore year of college and she went to Seville, Spain!  She loved her time abroad and was sad to come home.

HC: What was it like studying abroad in Spain?

Gill: The culture in Spain is so different in that it goes at a much slower pace. Even while I was there, I tutored a professor in English. I encourage everyone to go out of their comfort zone as I did because those four months flew by and I learned so much more living in another country because I immersed myself in the culture and was able to speak fluent Spanish within the first month I was there

This experience allowed her to become more fluent in the spanish language and she puts that to good use tutoring elementary school children with English as their second language.  This isn’t the only volunteering our Campus Cutie does!  Gillian also volunteers at the SPCA, which is an animal shelter in Adams County, PA where she gets to play with the dogs and cats— so cute!  On top of all of this Gill is the captain of her tennis team and the Vice President of Habitat for Humanity!

HC: Just what sparked your enthusiasm for volunteer work?

Gill: In high school I went on a mission trip to Costa Rica and it really opened my eyes to the atrocities around the world. I knew that I wouldn’t always be able to travel to help the community so I decided to get more involved in my hometown and brought that same passion for helping people to college. I love organizing fundraising events and socializing animals so that they are ready to be put up for adoption. I think being involved in the community is an imperative part in my college experience because I feel right at home, even though I am four hours away.

Whether it is through volunteering, playing tennis, or achievements in school, Gill is always inspiring others around her to be a better person.  We can’t wait to see what more she does during the rest of her time here at Gettysburg!

I am currently a senior at Gettysburg College!  I am an English major with a Wrting concentration and Women Gender Studies minor.
