During a recent TikTok doom scroll, I came across a video of someone setting up their yearly memory box, and it inspired me to make my own! If you’ve never had a memory box before, the concept is simple: you have a dedicated box to save little tokens that represent different things you’ve done throughout the year. This can include pictures, stickers, receipts, tickets, small knick-knacks, etc. I have a memory box that I’ve used since I was in high school, yet I have never had the idea to have a dedicated box just for one year, so 2024 is the year to start!

The first step is to find the right box. It can be a shoebox, a box from something you ordered, or go the route I did and find a cute decorative box. The size you get all depends on the types of things you plan on storing to document your year. Since I plan on saving smaller things, a smaller box will do. I picked one with a lid and a magnetic closure for easy access, as well as aesthetic preference – I’ll link the one I bought below in case you want to get the same for yourself! I also picked a plain one so I can personalize the outside of the box.

My plan is to simply collect things in the box as the year goes on to then open it up on New Year’s eve and go through everything inside as a way to reflect on the year. After the year is up and I begin to think of 2025’s box, I will move everything from 2024 into my larger memory box, so I still have all of those tokens I thought were important to keep throughout the year. As a collector, this feels like a great alternative to journaling. I find myself attempting to keep a bullet journal every year, but I always forget about it after a month or two. With the memory box, I feel less constrained to specific prompts, and I have more freedom to add items into the box as things happen.

I look forward to seeing what treasures 2024 brings!
