Daylily – Movements
If a man ever told me “Daylily” reminds him of me I would be down on one knee on the spot. The singer reassures his partner that they are loved and deserve all the beautiful parts of life like having a “pink cloud summer.” He acknowledges his partner’s struggles but assures them that he wants to help them find “another reason to stay for a while.” The bridge of this song is one of my favorite things ever written: “You are the rustling of leaves / And you are that honeysuckle breeze / You are the sunlight / Shine onto me (x3)” Once again, if a man EVER compared me to anything the singer compares his partner to I would instantly crumble and there would be a ring on that finger.
Halloween, 1987 – Crywolf
Although on first listen it is difficult to understand what Crywolf is saying, once you see the lyrics you can see just how much he loves the subject of the song. To me, this song depicts a forbidden romance that may seem doomed or unconventional to the people in their lives. Wolf assures his lover that he is deeply in love with them despite what other people may say about their relationship. I love the moodier feel of this song, making it a more unconventional love story between two outsiders. Despite the fact I know it is difficult to understand unless you already know the lyrics, I have dreamed about having this song be my first dance song at my wedding when I’m older, which is scary to think about but it’s true!
We’ll Never Have S*x – Leith Ross
This is one of the songs that I listen to and think “this is what love feels like.” The song is written and performed beautifully. I love the rawness and vulnerability of the lyrics, where the singer is giving all of herself to her partner aside from in a s*xual context. The idea of having such a deep love where your partner will choose to love you even if s*x isn’t in the equation is so wonderful and moving, especially for those on the ace spectrum.
Boys – Andrew Muccitelli
“Boys” is such a sweet song. The love described in this song feels so innocent and sweet, like a first relationship. The ukelele instrumental enhances the feeling of innocence even further. Even though the song is fairly simple, it works really well given the nature of the song. The lyrics and the instrumental don’t need to be extremely complex because the love depicted in the song is a simple one.
Let Light Be Light – Lizzy McAlpine
I am a sucker for anything written by Lizzy McAlpine. While she is the queen of writing gut-wrenching songs like “ceilings”, this song depicts a much sweeter and easier love. She acknowledges that she’s had trouble in relationships in the past, which may make it harder for her to open up and fully trust someone. But finally, she finds someone she knows is good for her and learns to give in despite the fear from her past and “let light be light”.
Overwhelming – Jon Bellion
The Human Condition by Jon Bellion is one of my favorite albums of all time. A lot of his discography could have landed on this list, to be honest, but ever since I heard this song for the first time in high school I have been obsessed. “Overwhelming” is such a playful love song that fits Jon Bellion’s sound so well.
I compiled all these songs onto a Spotify playlist if you’d like to take a listen!
