I’ve had the opportunity to watch some amazing shows recently, and I thought it best to recommend them to as many people as possible. These shows vary across streaming platforms, so hopefully at least one of them is available to you! Whether you’re searching for action, mystery, or a post-apocalyptic drama, I’ve got you covered.
- The Last of Us, HBO Max
-
Post-apocalyptic shows and movies are typically not my cup of tea, but I love this show so much more than I thought I would. The show follows Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as they trek across post-apocalyptic America. Ellie has found that she is immune to the virus that has plagued the world, and Joel is trying to get her to a facility so that they can develop a cure. Pascal and Ramsey are amazing in their roles, and every episode continues to develop their surrogate-father-and-daughter relationship beautifully.
The show appears to be making a beautiful homage to the video game for which it is based on. I haven’t played the games, but after a new episode releases, people comment on the callbacks or the lines directly taken from the game. Every week, I enjoy watching the side-by-side comparisons of the video game and the show, and it’s good to see that HBO Max is respecting the game and its fans.
The show has already been renewed for a season two, and there’s still a few episodes left before season one finishes! Be sure to catch The Last of Us on Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO Max.
- Treason, NETFLIX
-
This series follows an MI6 Deputy (Charlie Cox) as he works to expose secrets within the UK government. His family is thrown into the dangers of this mission, and with the help of a Russian spy from his past (Olga Kurylenko), they all work together to expose the truth.
This show is filled with plot twists and socking secrets, particularly in the final episode. It’s one of those series that keeps you gripped throughout the show’s entirety, and you won’t want to stop watching. One of the main reasons that I decided to watch this show is because I am a fan of Charlie Cox, and his performance in this show is outstanding. If you’re looking for a good spy thriller to binge, this is the show for you.
- Criminal Minds: Evolution, Paramount+
-
I recently watched all fifteen seasons of Criminal Minds, and I finished it at the perfect time to then begin Criminal Minds: Evolution. This is the sixteenth season of the show and it contains ten episodes. Not everyone from the prior season is back for season sixteen, but the BAU is back and chasing another cruel serial killer. If you’re a fan of crime dramas and mysteries, I would highly recommend Criminal Minds: Evolution. While you don’t necessarily need to watch all of the fifteen prior seasons, I would suggest doing so because it could fill in some gaps that you may not understand in the new season (and the show is amazing, so it’s a win-win).
The show has been renewed for another season, so I have my fingers crossed for a Matthew Gray Gubler appearance. Let’s also not forget about Shemar Moore! I would love to see a Penelope and Derek reunion.
- National Treasure: Edge of History, Disney+
-
I’m a huge National Treasure fan, so when I found out that they were making a Disney+ show, I was ecstatic. It ties together adventure, action, history, and mystery… so all things that I love. Sure, some of the show’s episodes are a tad cheesy, but when the episodes focus on the heists and the treasure, it makes up for it.
The show follows Jess Valenzuela (Lisette Olivera) as she works with her group of friends to uncover the truth about her family’s past and save a lost Pan-American treasure. They work against the clock to stop black-market antiquities dealer Billie Pearce (Catherine Zeta-Jones) from getting to the treasure first.
One of my favorite aspects of the show are the nods to the original National Treasure movies. Justin Bartha reprises his role as Riley Poole, and out of all the characters from the movies that I could have seen, Riley would have been my pick. In the show, he makes a comment about a specific page 47 (*wink, wink*). Riley also makes references to Ben and Abigail, yet sadly, they do not make appearances in the show. Characters such as Peter Sadusky (Harvey Keitel) and FBI Agent Hendricks (Armando Riesco) are integral parts of the show’s storyline as well.
I’m hopeful that the creation of this show and the inclusion of past characters is confirmation that a third National Treasure movie is in the works, and Nicholas Cage and Diane Kruger better return to reprise their roles if so. A girl can only hope…
Now that I have given you some ideas, which series are you going to watch?
