HC: What made you choose Georgia State University?

JH: It was honestly a dream that I was having one night that made me choose Georgia State. For about 2 months, I was praying for God to send me a sign on whether I should attend Georgia Southern or Georgia State. Howard University was my original dream school, but I couldn’t afford it. On the other hand, my sister attended Georgia Southern and after visiting the school a few times I fell in love. I ended up finding my roommate and all for Southern, but something in my spirit wasn’t settled. My sister kept trying to tell me to reconsider and look into other options like Georgia State. After getting accepted, it was more of a waiting game on the sign. On one random night in March, I was having a dream about two buildings. The buildings were identical, however one represented Southern and the other State. It just so happened that every time I mentioned Georgia State in my dream, the building would light up, but when I mentioned Southern the building remained dim. I took that dream as a sign that Georgia State is where God wanted me to be all along and I’ve never looked back.

HC: What has been your favorite memory from GSU?

JH: My favorite memory at Georgia State had to be when I was the Community Service Chair of Softer Touch and we were able to host a program called “The Warm Up”. The purpose of the program was to provide warm food and blankets to the homeless community during the winter time. What stuck with me the most throughout the experience was the fact that we were able to give this community once less thing to worry about for the day. For them to not have to stress over two things that many of us don’t even give a second thought throughout our lifetime really made me feel that we were making an impact no matter how big or small the act may have been. Also, for a lot of people volunteering with us, it was their first time interacting with the homeless community on our campus. So, to see how their impressions and biases about this group were transformed was amazing as well.

HC: What organizations are you involved in on campus?

JH: Currently, I am a spring 2016 Initiate of the Zeta Phi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated and I serve on the Board of Directors for the Student Alumni Association. I decided to step away from a few positions I held last year to focus on my academics.

HC: Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

JH: This is always the hardest question for me to answer. Honestly, in 5 years I see myself being truly happy with whatever pathway I choose. If that means finishing up my Master’s in Clinical Psychology, obtaining a dual Law Degree along with my Master’s in Educational Policy, or even starting up my own Non-Profit organization for urban youth; I just want to find happiness within my purpose.

HC: If there was one thing that you could change about your college experience, what would you change and why?

JH: I would go back and become an Inceptor if I had the chance again. My anxiety really stopped me from going forth with the process when I had the time and opportunity. I just always wanted to serve my University in a greater capacity and felt as though becoming an Inceptor was the way for me to do it.

HC: What have you learned about yourself during college?

JH: I truly believe that I came to terms with who I am when I got to college. I understand the inner workings of myself as a person now and I am very clear with the things that I will and will not tolerate. I know where my passions lie and understand what I want to do with my life more than in terms of just obtaining a career. I know what my talents are, I know the type of people I enjoy being around as well as my hobbies. I just believe college provided me with a lot of experiences to continuously grow and uncover certain aspects about myself, so I could fully understand who I am as Jasmine Denise Holt and be comfortable with that.

HC: What advice would you give to freshman right now?

JH: It’s okay not to have it all together right now. I know it might seem like people are expecting you to have your life planned out now that you have entered college, but it’s okay to explore your different interest. Continue to seek out who you are and where your interest lie. Invest time in yourself and the things that you are the most intrigued about and go from there. At the end of the day you only have your own expectations to live up to, so don’t miss out on life trying to live up to standards others have set for you.
