Super sweet and new to the yard, Mikayla Swinson is full of surprises. She has been active on Georgia State’s campus since her freshman year and doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon! Check it out as Mikayla shares some of her highlights in AKA and her traveling aspirations!
How would your friends describe you?
“My friends usually describe me as motherly. They also consider me the peace-maker, but when it’s time to turn up, I definitely do. But I’m usually laid back and I go with the flow.”
What are some of your personal interests?
“I like to read and workout. I love to shop; I’m a shopaholic. I love watching movies. And I love to travel. I’m definitely going to do more traveling in the future.”
Where are some places you would like to travel to?
“For spring break I’m planning to go to Cancun and it will be my first time out of the country. I’ve also wanted to go to Europe and Australia. Really, I want to touch down on every continent.”
Where would be your dream vacation spot?
“I’ve always wanted to go to Brazil. I had a friend growing up, her dad was Brazilian and her mom was Dominican, and I just loved going to her house and experiencing a different culture.”
What has been the highlight, so far, of this school year?
“This is my first semester being in AKA (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.). The biggest highlight is when my line sisters and I had our first AKA week. My first’s founder’s day was also a highlight.”
What made this semester’s AKA week so different?
“I was no longer just considered interested in the organization. I wasn’t just going to get my face out there and to get to know the people in the chapter. I’m actually part of the chapter now. I went to the program as an AKA. That in itself was different for me because I didn’t necessarily have to have the pen and paper, ready to jot down notes. I was just able to go and facilitate the program. And then my first founder’s day was just so surreal. It’s still surreal that I’m even here as an AKA.”
What makes you happy?
“Other people’s happiness tends to make me happier than my own happiness. I love to see other people happy. I love seeing acts of kindness. Pretty much anything that makes others happy, makes me happy. If I can go out of my way to make someone else feel great about himself, then I feel great inside too.”
Describe your “perfect guy.”
“He has to be a man of God. I’m short so I need someone taller than me. He has to have a great personality because I like to laugh and I’m very playful so I need someone to match that. He has to have goals and ambition. He also should also be honest and loving.”
Perfect date?
“Anything ‘different.’ Let’s not do the whole dinner and a movie thing for a first date. I want to see something I’ve never seen or do something I’ve never done. There is so much to do in Atlanta and I’m not from here, so I would want someone to take me somewhere new, interactive and fun.
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
“I’m a second-degree black belt. I don’t currently train but I used to so the title still counts. A lot of people also don’t know that I have two half sisters. People often think I’m an only child but I definitely have sisters. I am also deathly afraid of bugs.”
